Dornier Do 17 Medium Bomber - Military and Civilian Aircraft
The Dornier Do 17 (sometimes referred to as "the Pencil" due to its fundamental shape) was a respect medium bomber class utilized by the German Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain and throughout the Second World War.
Initially, the Do 17 was a high-speed mail plane development which was furthered into a wartime machine by the addition of an internal bomb bay and machine gun positions for self-defense.
The most notable branch of the Do 17 tree would have to be the series of Do 17 nightfighters produced with an extensive array of antennae and radar equipment.

Dornier Do 17 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dornier Do 17, sometimes referred to as the Bleistift ("pencil"), was a World War II light bomber produced by Dornier that was used at the beginning of the war by the Luftwaffe.
In 1933 Dornier thought it would enter the market as well, and started the design of a fast twin-engine plane in response to a Lufthansa tender, and the Do 17 was the result.
The original design sported a single tail, but in tests it proved to be marginally stable and a new twin-tail version was introduced, which also had the side effect of improving the field of fire for the rear gunner.

Dornier Do 217 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dornier Do 217 was a World War II heavy bomber designed from scratch as a replacement for the venerable Dornier Do 17.
Dornier recognized shortcomings of its fast Dornier Do 17 well before the war.
Much of Dornier's efforts in 1938-1940 were devoted to finding more powerful engines and improving the flying qualities, and when the BMW 801 radial engine was available the Do 217 really got into its stride and carried a heavier bomb load than any other Luftwaffe bomber of the time.

 The Dornier Do17
Dornier constructed a number of aircraft that were later to be dubbed the "Flying Pencils" due mainly to the long thin outline of the fuselage.
The first flight of the Dornier was on November 23rd 1934, and was rejected by Lufthansa and the prototypes were left in a hangar, only to be discovered a few years later by Robert Untucht who was the air ministry liaison officer, and a test pilot with Lufthansa.
There were a number of variants of the Dornier Do17, but late in 1937 a variant was called for by the RLM (German Air Ministry) for a heavier variant that could carry a greater bombload, greater fuel capacity and be able to accomodate any range of power plants.

In the days of the Battle of Britain, the Dornier 17 had been an easy target for the Spitfires and Hurricanes of Fighter Command but had proved itself to be a valuable part of the Luftwaffe in campaigns that led up to this battle.
It made its mark in the attack on Poland in September 1939 and its versatility was such that it was used as a bomber, reconnaissance plane and as a pathfinder by the Luftwaffe.

The Do 17 began its inauspicious career as a civilian transport designed to satisfy a 1933 Lufthansa tender for a passenger/mail transport.
The plane that the Dornier engineers completed in 1934 didn't impress the people at Lufthansa, as its fuselage was too narrow for use as a practical passenger craft.
Dornier engineers used the Do 17 as a template for the updated Do 215 and highly-successful Do 217.
