Dornier Do 335 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In May 1942 Dornier submitted an updated version with a 1,000 kg bombload as the P.231, in response to a requirement for a single seat high speed bomber/intruder (other entries included the Blohm and Voss BV 155).
The aircraft was assembled at Dornier's plant in Oberpfaffenhofen (southern Germany) on April 16, 1945.
In 1975 the aircraft was beautifully restored by Dornier employees, many of who had worked on the airplane originally.

Dornier Flugzeugwerke - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dornier Flugzeugwerke was a German aircraft manufacturer founded in Friedrichshafen in 1914 by Claudius Dornier.
Dornier, originally Dornier Metallbau rose to prominence in the 1920s and 1930s in aviation and as a manufacturer of large flying boats, remarkable at the time for their all-metal construction.
Dornier also built a series of successful land planes, including the Komet ("Comet") and Merkur ("Mercury") that were used by Luft Hansa and other European carriers during the 1920s and early 30s.

 Do335
The Dornier Do335 was a bold attempt to embody the centre-line thrust concept in a practical and efficient airframe.
In the light of the massive Allied air raids which had begun that year, the aircraft was to be redesigned as a multi-role fighter of broadly similar performance.
Several were used by Erprobungskommando 335 (EK335), formed in September 1944 for the service evaluation and development of operational tactics for this new type.

In response to the request, Dornier submitted its P 231/3 design for consideration, and a development contract for three prototypes was awarded in early 1943.
Still however, based on inspection of the NASM Do 335 in 1973 prior to its later restoration and repainting by Dornier, it can be regarded as highly probable that all Do 335s produced from late-autumn 1944 onward had their undersides finished in RLM 76.

By 1942, Dornier was still continuing design work and the war situation was worsening.
It was built at Dornier's Rechlin-Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany, plant on April 16, 1945.
The Dornier craftsmen doing the restoration - many of whom had worked on the original aircraft -- were astonished to find that the explosive charges fitted to blow off the tail fin and rear propeller in an emergency were still in the aircraft and active, 30 years after their original installation!

The Do 335 employed a unique engine arrangement, with one engine in the nose and one behind the wing, the latter driving a propeller in the extreme tail.
The Do 335 was a fast and powerful aircraft, but its total production did not exceed 28 by the end of the war.
Although various improvements were made to the fighting strength of the aircraft, the close of WWII precluded the Dornier Do335A Pfeil from entering actual combat.

The Dornier 335 Arrow was one of the most unusual fighters of the Second World War.
With one engine mounted conventionally in the nose driving a propeller at the front of the aircraft and one engine buried mid-fuselage driving a rear mounted propeller, it had the aerodynamic characteristics of a single-engined fighter yet the power of a twin.
Most of the pre-production Do335's completed by Dornier were painted RLM 70/71/65 except for the Do 335 V1, which was painted in overall RLM 71 with RLM 65 undersurfaces and the propellers and spinners painted in RLM 70.The standard scheme for twin-engined bombers and reconnaissance aircraft was RLM 70/71/65.

 Second World War Books Review
Designed by Claude Dornier, who already had much experience with fore and aft propulsion systems in his pre-war flying boats, this kind of tandem engine arrangement also appeared in designs in Italy in 1935 (the JONA 10), the Netherlands in 1939 (the Fokker D. XXII), and Japan in 1943 (the Tachikawa Ki-94 Model I).
In January 1943 Dornier's presentation of the unconventional P.231 earned a Luftwaffe contract for a high speed bomber with a bomb load of 500kg and a range of 2000 kilometers.
Before much progress had been made however, it became clear that the Do 335 was suffering because of emphasis on jet development, notably the Me 262 which seemed to meet and exceed the specifications for which the Dornier model had been designed.

Arado, Dornier and Junkers submitted proposals and Dorniers was the eventual winner.
