Dornier, originally Dornier Metallbau rose to prominence in the 1920s and 30s as a manufacturer of large flying boats, remarkable at the time for their all-metal construction.
Dornier's most significant design before and during World War II was the Do 17 and its derivatives, which provided the Luftwaffe with a bomber and nightfighter.
Dornier also developed the fastest piston-engined fighter of the war, the Do 335, which was too late to enter service.

The Do 13 was a 'simplified' Do 11 and came next, but had so many problems it did not fully enter service, with several of the first planes crashing.
The Do 23 corrected many faults, but was still a lackluster aircraft, and was withdrawn from service by 1936 and replaced by superior aircraft that had been developed.
The Do 11 is noteworthy as having served in secret and been the main heavy bomber of the quietly developing Luftwaffe, if only for a short while.

For some, the inability to get additional funding threatens their long-term survival, while for others it severely restricts their efforts to expand, which is bad not just for these companies but for the broader economy as well.
Given that start-ups of all kinds are being hit by the tightening of credit, and that airlines have been hit especially hard by the events of Sept. 11, start-up airlines face a kind of double whammy in finding new financing.
Throughout the weakening industry, manufacturers, financiers and airlines are all trying to make each other absorb the risks in case an airline fails or a jet can't bring in enough revenue to cover its lease or loan payments.
