Dornoch was selected as the location of the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Caithness in 1222 by the then Bishop, Gilbert de Moravia.
The history of Dornoch Cathedral continued in a reasonably orderly way until 1570, when a clan feud between the Murrays of Dornoch and the MacKays of Strathnaver led to the latter setting it on fire.

The Royal Burgh of Dornoch (Gaelic: Dòrnach) is a burgh and seaside resort in Sutherland, Highland, on the east coast of the Scottish Highlands, and the north shore of the Dornoch Firth.
Dornoch was a parliamentary burgh, combined with Dingwall, Kirkwall, Tain and Wick in the Northern Burghs constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1708 to 1801 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1918.
In 1918 the constituency was abolished and the Dornoch component was merged into the then new county constituency of Caithness and Sutherland.

Dornoch was left a ruin after the fire, until it was restored in the 19th century.

Until recently, when a 'celebrity' marriage hit the headlines, the cathedral town of Dornoch was a relatively undiscovered delight, perhaps known mainly for its excellent golf courses and sandy beaches.
Until 1975, it was also the county town of Sutherland, but, despite its civic importance, its population amounted to only 1,284 in 1991, having increased from 497 in 1881 and 725 in 1951.
It has a particularly attractive whiteharled parish church dating from 1737 and the village is overlooked by the enormous statue of the first Duke of Sutherland on Ben Bhragaidh behind (see photograph on right which shows some of Golspie's old fishing cottages in the foreground).
