The Royal Burgh of Dornoch is a burgh and seaside resort in Sutherland, Highland, on the east coast of the Scottish Highlands, and the north shore of the Dornoch Firth.
Dornoch boasts the thirteenth-century Dornoch Cathedral, the Old Town Jail and a notable golf course, the Royal Dornoch Golf Club, the 5th best golf course outwith the United States, according to Golf Digest magazine.
Dornoch was a parliamentary burgh, combined with Dingwall, Kirkwall, Tain and Wick in the Northern Burghs constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1708 to 1801 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1918.

Dornoch Cathedral is a parish church in the Church of Scotland, serving the small Sutherland town of Dornoch, in the Scottish Highlands.
It was built in the 13th century, in the reign of King Alexander II and the episcopate of Gilbert de Moravia (later Saint Gilbert of Dornoch).
In 1570 the Cathedral was burnt down during local feuding.

In 1567 the cathedral was burnt by marauding clansmen, but a much more serious incident occurred in 1570 after the young, teenaged Earl of Sutherland was rescued from the clutches of his enemy, the Earl of Caithness, by the men of Dornoch.
The cathedral remained roofless for fifty years and it was the beginning of a long deterioration.
The people of Dornoch are rightly proud of their ancient and beautiful cathedral with its turbulent and colourful history; and they are very conscious of the responsibility they have to preserve that heritage and hand it on in good order to succeeding generations.

The cathedral remained roofless, until 1616, when Sir Robert Gordon re-roofed and repaired the chancel and transepts, although for the next two hundred years the cathedral continued to be used without a nave.
In 1655, Dornoch was occupied by Royalist troops in the struggle against Cromwell, and as they retreated, laid waste to the area, and the building suffered yet again.
During the rebellion of 1745, when Dornoch was occupied first by the King’s army and then by the Jacobites, much damage was done to the principal buildings of the burgh, it was said that men and horses were stabled in the cathedral.

Dornoch’s 13th century Cathedral was originally dedicated to the saint, while the town’s most important annual trading fair was St Barr’s Fair, originally held on 10 September, the date of Finbarr of Ulster’s birthday.
The Cathedral (apart from the tower where the Murrays made their final, desperate last stand against the attackers) was destroyed, as were many private houses in the town.
Cathedral was destroyed by fire during clans feuds in 1570 (apart from the tower) and lay in ruin for 50 years.
