Choibalsan is the administrative center of Dornod province, the fourth largest town of Mongolia.
Unlike the Buryats of Selenge, Khentii, Bulgan and Khovsgol provinces, who were severely repressed and scattered during 1930s communist purges, the Buryats of Dornod were lucky enough to preserve their culture and identity intact.
However, Dornod is populated mostly by representatives of 11 tribes of Khori Buryats.

A management plan for the Ganga Lake Monument Area is being elaborated with the objective of developing ecotourism in view of the great cultural (stone monuments) and natural ('swan assembly' in autumn) potential of the area.
The lakes are shallow, with a saucer-shaped depth profile, and vary considerably in size both seasonally and from year to year.

 The Dornod Uranium Project in Mongolia
The known uranium resources in the Dornod area occur in six deposits belonging to two deposit types, the vein-stockwork deposits (represented by Dornod) and sandstone.
The Dornod mines and associated support infrastructure were developed as a "sub-Combine" (called ERDES) to the Priargunsky Mining and Chemical Enterprise, a division of the (then Soviet) Ministry of Atomic Energy (Minatom).
As of 7 August 1998, the Dornod project has been placed on standby pending an improvement in the fundamentals of the uranium industry and the resolution of the long outstanding debt of the Kazakhstan government to World Wide Minerals Ltd.

The Maikhan property is 2500-hectares in size and is located 35km northwest of the soum/town of Norovlin on the border between the Mongolian provinces of Khentii and Dornod.
(The province of Dornod hosts two of the largest uranium discoveries in Mongolia, the Gurvanbulag and Dornod deposits.) Access to Maikhan is via paved road from Ulaan Baatar to the Khentii capital of Underkhan (about 360km east), and then by dirt road for approximately 160km northeast.
The element distribution in the ore as described in the Russian Maikhan reports is very similar to the Gurvanbulag and Dornod uranium deposits.
