Taught to play by her father, she won her first national title at the age of fourteen.
In the 1919 singles finals at Wimbledon, the 20-year-old Lenglen competed on grass for the first time and defeated the great champion Dorothea Douglass-Chambers to capture her first of six Wimbledon singles titles.
At the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium, she went 60-4 in capturing the Gold medal.
