Dorothy Hill's fascination for corals was sparked not by the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, but by a visit to the small Queensland town of Mundubbera, about 160 km inland.
It was the beginning of a distinguished scientific career that established Dorothy Hill as a world authority on fossil corals, and one of Australia's foremost geologists.
Hill returned to her old university in 1937 as a research fellow, and has remained part of the institution ever since - as lecturer, professor, and professor emeritus.

Dorothy Hill AC CBE FAA FRS ( September 10, 1909 - April 23, 1998) was an Australian geologist, the first female professor at an Australian university, and the first and only female president of the Australian Academy of Science
Hill studied at Cambridge from 1930 to 1932 researching the the Carboniferous corals of Scotland, and obtaining her PhD.
When Hill returned to Australia she took on the huge task of mapping the limestone coral faunas of Australia and to use them to outline a wide-ranging stratigraphy, producing papers on the coral faunas of all states but South Australia.

Dorothy M. Hill is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University (B.S. in Education and D.A. in English), and the University of Pittsburgh (M.A. in English).
Hill is the author of three curriculum guides for high school teachers published by the Center for Learning: Song of Solomon (Toni Morrison), 1988; A Doll's House/Hedda Gabler (Henrik Ibsen), 1989 Frankenstein (Mary Shelly), 1991 and Their Eyes were Watching god (Zora Neale Hurston), 1996.
She was involved in lay activities at St. Bernard Parish in Mt. Lebanon, PA having served for two years in the St. Bernard School Board and then served two years as President of the St. Bernard Parish Council.

Dorothy Marie Bodeman Bellamy Hill of Lockhart, Texas passed away in Austin, Texas on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004 after a long and courageous struggle with cancer.
Dorothy was born near Lockhart to Gus Bodeman and Marie Hartung Bodeman on Sept. 30, 1918.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands.

Dorothy Poynton Hill, 1932 Olympic Gold Champion, was upset by sports editor Frederick Graham predicting that she would not make the 1936 American Olympic Swimming Team.
Graham later wrote an apology in his column that sounded more like he may have been the reason she was able to win the Final Olympic try-outs competition due to her then trying harder.

Hill’s mission was two-fold -- to save the folkways and history of California’s Native Americans as legacy to future generations and to create a research collection at CSU, Chico for further education and understanding of the rich contributions of Native Americans to the history of California.
While work on the collection will never be completely finished, a three-year grant of $400,000 from the U. Institute of Museum and Library Services (under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act) enabled the preservation and stabilization of the audio and video material (some of which was literally falling apart).
