Dorsal fin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There may be two dorsal fins, a long fin merged with the caudal fin (tail), or no dorsal fin at all, as with the knifefish.
In relation to the size of the creature, the dorsal fin of the male orca is quite large, as much as 1.8 m high.
The dorsal fins of whales develop distinctive nicks and wear patterns with time, and this fact is used by wildlife biologists to identify individuals in the field.

Dorsal greatly enlarged in adults (especially males), reaching adipose fin when depressed, but is shorter in females; pelvics rather long, reach anal fin in adult males, but not in females; lower lobe of caudal often longer than upper.
Dorsal fin convex, nearer snout than base of caudal fin, and behind pelvic fins; dorsal fin with 2-3 short spines, 10-11 rays; anal fin 2-3 spines, 6-7 rays; pelvic fins 1 spine, 6 rays.
Dorsal spines separated from each other and from the soft-rayed fins, each spine having a reduced membrane attached to its posterior side; anal spine free from rest of the fin; posterior margin of pectorals nearly truncate; caudal truncate to slightly indented.

Fin whales (also know as finback whales) can reach lengths of over 80 feet and weights of more than 160,000 lbs in the northern hemisphere and over 85 feet and 170,000 lbs in the southern hemisphere and are distributed around the world except for the tropics, i.e., they have an antitropical distribution.
Fin whales feed on a wide array of prey species, depending upon availability, ranging from small schooling fish such as sand eels, herring and tinker mackerel, to crustaceans such as krill and copepods, to squid.
Although fin whales are relatively common and are believed to be the dominant cetacean species during all seasons in the US Exclusive Economic Zone, scientists don't have enough data to determine the fin whale's population trends.

In the majority of fishes, however, there are one, two, or three dorsal fins, a distinct tail fin, and an anal fin.
These are the pectoral fins, placed just back of the gills, and the pelvic, or ventral, fins, variable in position and sometimes lacking entirely.
An adipose fin (fatty tissue without support) is found behind the dorsal fin in some fish, e.g., the salmon and the catfish.

Overlock, a senior research student from Winslow, claims to have made the discovery that brook trout have individualized dorsal fins -- what he calls "fin prints" -- that enable observers to differentiate one fish from another.
He suddenly noticed that he could tell the fish apart by the patterns in their dorsal fins.
After Overlock brought his findings to Chacko, the pair developed a technique to individually photograph the fish and then transfer the patterns on the dorsal fin into fl-and-white images.

In this study, we compared the precision of age determinations between readers and mean back-calculated lengths at age of river carpsuckers using scales and dorsal fin ray sections from 172 individuals collected in the Missouri River.
Age agreement between readers was 71% for both scales and dorsal fin ray sections.
We suggest using scales to age and back-calculate lengths for river carpsuckers; however, fin rays can be used to corroborate ages derived from scales.

In the Beaufort study area, there are some distinct dorsal fins that have been known to change over time and still be recognized as the same.
In one case the dorsal fin changed so drastically that without the freezebrand, applied during a live capture, this fin would not have been verified as the same individual.
This shows that there may be some dorsal fins that change over time and using photo-identification there is no way to classify them as the same.
