Dorsal root ganglion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a dorsal root ganglion (DRG) from a chicken embryo (around stage of day 7) after incubation overnight in NGF growth medium stained with anti-neurofilament antibody.
In anatomy and neurology, the dorsal root ganglion is a nodule on a dorsal root that contains cell bodies of afferent spinal nerve neurons.
All of the axons in the dorsal root convey somatosensory information.

Rat Dorsal Root Ganglia Neurons - Cambrex
In the absence of mitotic inhibitors, the neurons tend to cluster (ganglionate) and detach from the substrate.
A ganglion is a group of nerve cells forming a nerve center, especially one located outside the brain or spinal cord.
Dorsal Root Ganglion, also called Spinal Ganglion, is the ganglion of the posterior root of each spinal segmental nerve, containing the cell bodies of the unipolar primary sensory neurons.

ePrintsUQ - Vulnerability of the Dorsal Root Ganglion in Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis
The dorsal (posterior) root ganglion is a relatively neglected part of the nervous system from the clinical point of view.
In recent studies on the pathophysiology of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE), the main animal model of multiple sclerosis, the DRG of the rabbit was shown to be the site of extensive inflammation and demyelination and of focal conduction block in a high proportion of the large diameter afferents.
The vulnerability of the DRG is due to a deficient blood-nerve barrier and possibly also to a susceptibility of the branch point of the ganglion neurone to demyelination-induced conduction block.

Morphometry of dorsal root ganglion in chronic experimental diabetic neuropathy.
The histogram of the diabetic DRG has a narrower small neuron peak, with a slight left-shift, with the division between large and small neurons remaining unchanged; an area of 1,500 [micro][m.sup.2] (diameter 20 [micro]m) separates large clear (type A) from small dark (type B) neurons qualitatively in both diabetic and control samples.
Earlier pathological studies on spinal roots (10) and dorsal root ganglion showing demyelination, vacuolar degeneration, and pigmentary changes (11) have been supported by recent pathophysiological studies supporting the sensory neuron as a target and, in particular, the mitochondrion as the most relevant organelle.

These isoforms are still present in all dorsal root ganglion neurons in neonates, whereas high molecular weight tau isoforms are expressed in a subset of dorsal root ganglion neurons.
In the adult, high molecular weight tau is restricted to small- and medium-sized dorsal root ganglion neurons; its distribution largely coincides with the population of substance P and calcitonin gene related peptide peptidergic neurons.
This differential distribution was observed in the cell body, dorsal roots and sciatic nerve axons.
