Bookreporter.com - A PARADIGM OF EARTH by Candas Jane Dorsey
In a way, this was also a test of Dorsey's splendid narrative art as it weaves through a compelling near-future novel, in which an unformed alien and some very unconventional humans are brought together to learn Life 100 in an unexpected context.
Dorsey takes a bold and risky approach (one that pays off awesomely) by placing all of her characters on the margins of so-called "normal" life.
Dorsey, unarguably one of the finest science-fiction writers Canada has ever produced, builds everyday language into an eloquent symphonic fabric of theme and resolution that kept me irresistibly moving from chapter to chapter.

 FFWD Weekly - August 3rd, 2000
In fact, Dorsey never really distinguished between fantasy and realism, except as "marketing categories." She first studied fiction writing at the University of Alberta in the early ’70s, with W.O. Mitchell, Doug Barbour and Rudy Wiebe, and studied poetry under Bert Almon – hardly anyone’s idea of boot-camp for SF writers.
In Dorsey’s career she’s been a playwright, a poet and the president of the Writers’ Guild of Alberta, but has always seen herself as a writer, period.
Dorsey learned about harsh reality during her early years as a child care worker.
