Dosage Index - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vullier, published a study on the subject (called Dosage), which was subsequently modified by an Italian breeding expert, Dr. Franco Varola, in two books he authored, entitled Typology Of The Race Horse and The Functional Development Of The Thoroughbred.
The new approach, which was more accessible to owners, breeders and handicappers and was supported by solid statistical data, rapidly caught on, and the term "Dosage Index" has been a fixture in the lexicon of horse racing ever since.
Yet the statistical foundation of Dosage remains compelling and the theory accurately differentiates Thoroughbred pedigree type for large populations of horses competitively performing over a range of distances, track surfaces and ages.

FS-664 - Dosage and Bloodline Patterns in Steeplechasers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Because dosage analyses only evaluate the sires in a pedigree and do not differentiate between paternal and maternal influence, the use of dosage as an absolute indicator of ability has met with resistance and is still controversial in Thoroughbred circles.
Horses with low dosage indices (the possible range is zero to positive infinity) and a low dosage center of distribution (possible range negative 2 through positive 2) are generally considered to have a stamina-oriented pedigree, and horses with high figures are generally considered to have brilliant (sprint) speed pedigrees.
Further graphical comparisons of dosage indices are shown by Figure 1, which reveal that steeplechase stakes winners dosage indices are notably skewed toward the low end of the range (left with a graphical analysis), and the general Thoroughbred population is skewed toward the higher end of the range.

 Dosage: A Practical Approach
Dosage, a technique for classifying Thoroughbred pedigrees by type, originated in the early part of the 20th century from the research of the Frenchman Lt. Col.
Vuillier believed that the objective in breeding should be to attain Dosage figures in the foal as close as possible to the established Dosage figures for the breed.
The combination of Dosage and our observation that 21 winners of the Kentucky Derby since 1972 were ranked as a juvenile within 10 pounds of the high weight on the Experimental Free Handicap or were named juvenile champion in another country has become an especially powerful tool in isolating the true classic contenders.

 Demystifying Dosage
They believe that a dosage index of less than 4.00 and a center of distribution below 1.25 means that the sire and dam are a good match, that the productive possibilities of the mare are somehow optimized if she is bred to a stallion who puts the dosage right.
In fact, the dosage figures differ from an aptitude test in the respect that nothing about about them constitutes a measure of what can correctly be called competence in the racehorse.
Dosage figures may predict that a horse will run his best race at 10 furlongs, but, even if that turns out to be the case, it doesn't mean he will ever win a race.

The idea rapidly caught on, and the term "Dosage Index" has been a fixture in the lexicon of (The sport of racing horses) horse racing ever since.
The index itself is compiled by noting the presence of certain influential sires, known as chefs-de-race ((The Romance language spoken in France and in countries colonized by France) French for "chiefs of racing," or, more esoterically, "masters of the breed") in the first four generations of a horse's pedigree.
For example, 2005 Kentucky Derby winner (additional info and facts about Giacomo) Giacomo has a Dosage Index of 4.33 and no Solid or Professional points in his Dosage Profile.

The dosage index (DI) is derived from the profile to reflect the ratio of speed-to-stamina in a pedigree.
Specifically, his dual dosage theory required a horse to be weighted within the top ten pounds of the Experimental Free Handicap highweight and have a dosage index of 4.00 or lower.

Dosage is a theoretical means of mathematically assessing a horse's genetic inclination toward speed or stamina based on the number and type of chefs-de-race (influential sires) in the first four generations of a horse's pedigree.
Based a horse's dosage profile, mathematical formulas are used to compute his dosage index (DI) and centre of distribution (CD).
Theoretically, the higher the dosage numbers, the more inclined a horse is to speed over stamina.

Horse-racing is an equestrian sporting activity which has been practiced over the centuries; the chariot races of Roman times were an early example, as was the contest of the steeds of the god Odin and the giant Hrungnir in Norse mythology.
In recent years, however, several horses with no Solid or Professional chefs-de-race in the first four generations of their pedigrees — and indeed, a few with Dosage Indexes of above 4.00 — have managed to win the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, highlighting the issue of increasing speed and decreasing stamina in contemporary Thoroughbred pedigrees.
Nevertheless, the statistical foundation of Dosage remains compelling and the theory accurately differentiates Thoroughbred pedigree type for large populations of horses competitively performing over a range of distances, track surfaces and ages.

The heart of the dosage business is the roster of chefs-de-race, the 139 sires whose distance-siring tendencies provide the foundation of the program.
The Dosage Index and Center of Distribution are calculated from the mix of chefs in the first four generations of a horse's pedigree.
The best use of dosage, in other words, is to check the mating you've already chosen on the basis of quality to make sure you don't breed a four-furlong flash or a two-mile plodder.

Of those that have won it, with a dosage higher than 3.00, it is notable that they have either boasted a high number of dosage points, or, they have had some professional points in their profile.
Winners of the race typically have a high number of total dosage points (average 33), with only one winner since 1940 having had less than 16 dosage points, and only three horses in the last twenty years having had less than 20 points.

Dosage is a system that attempts to predict the distance potential of horses based on certain sires in the first four generations of their pedigrees.
The fundamental principle of dosage theory is that the higher the DI and CD, the lower the distance potential of the horse, and conversely, the lower the DI and CD, the higher the distance potential of the horse.
More specifically, horses with a DI higher than 4.00 or a CD higher than 1.25 are not supposed to be able to win high-class races at 1 1/4 miles or farther under level weights or weight for age.

This book explains it all including how to create a dosage profile for any horse, how to find the dosage index and center of distribution, how to determine dual-qualifying, dosage figures for hundreds of top class runners, speed and turf attributes of leading sires and broodmares sires.
