 Priory of Sion A-Z
The Saunière saga is another strand of the mystery, whose relevance to the Priory of Sion rests solely - as far as I can see - on the fact that it is mentioned in the Dossiers Secrets.
January 17th: This is a date which appears a number of times in the Rennes-le-Château mystery and the Dossiers Secrets:
If the Dossiers Secrets are false then Saunière and Rennes-le-Château are red herrings.

The Insignificant Man - The Priory of Sion
Either the claims in the Dossiers secrets are true, and the Priory of Sion is the ancient and powerful secret society that it claims, or those documents are an elaborate forgery, the history of the Priory being a fiction put together through painstaking research, often using obscure historical sources.
According to the Dossiers secrets, the purpose of the Priory of Sion was — and is — to protect, and to promote the interests of, the descendants of the Merovingian dynasty of Frankish kings.
Godfroi de Bouillon, the alleged founder of the Priory of Sion, is said to have been of Merovingian descent himself (although this claim is much disputed by historians and geneaologists).

According to Les Dossiers secrets de Henri Lobineau (which, incidentally, is a name invented by the same Three Musketeers), the legitimate heirs to the throne of France to this very day are still the Merovingians, dethroned in 751 by the Carolingians.
There is no doubt that both Les Dossiers secrets and the parchments are false documents, compiled in the year 1967, and all the people involved in the falsification have admitted it, even after a few years had passed.
According to Gérard de Sède, the parchments were fabricated by Philippe de Chérisey (1925-1985), an impoverished French marquis who was a professional TV actor and a devotee of enigmatic riddles.

The popularity of The Da Vinci Code likewise owes something to the novelty of its central idea, the soundness of its supporting research, and the professional crafting of its plot and characters.
