THE MAGIC GREENWOOD OF DOSSO DOSSI
Dosso Dossi(*), originally the catalogue of an exhibition at the New York Metropolitan Museum, is a work of some beauty in itself, from the cover (in Dosso's favoured colours of cypress green and dull witchhazel gold) inwards.
Dosso Dossi, with his brother Battista as his assistant, was the principal court painter to Alfonso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara and Modena, who sustained the worrying position of Lucrezia Borgia's third husband.
Dosso was Ariosto's honoured friend, whom he praises alongside Raphael and Mantegna in the thirty-third canto of the revised and final version of the poem.

Dosso Dossi was the outstanding painter of the Ferrarese School in the 16th century.

The Courtly Art of Dosso Dossi
Dosso Dossi's paintings epitomize the taste for literary conceits and complex allegories that was the hallmark of aristocratic culture in Renaissance Italy.
Dosso refigures this passage in terms of the concentrated activity of a master painter.
Moreover, the fact that Dosso does not include the model for his painter's careful record--usually present in the subject type of "artist at work"--suggests that the use of the ephemeral butterfly is emblematic: a figment of the artist's imagination.

From 1514 to 1542, Dosso Dossi was official painter to the court of Ferrara, one of the most enlightened centers of the Italian High Renaissance.
Dosso was controversial in his time for painting directly onto a canvas without preparatory drawings; the catalog includes x-rays of the paintings that show how Dosso changed his compositions.
Even if you are not a Dosso Dossi fan, the book is a valuable study into the mind and techniques of an artist, and to the state of painting in central and northern Italy during the Renaissance.

Dosso Dossi Exhibition (Getty Press Release)
While Dosso's duties included designing banners for tournaments and cutlery for the duke's table, it was his poetic sensibilities as a painter that most appealed to this highly sophisticated audience.
Dosso's paintings underwent close technical analysis in preparation for the exhibition, along with some works by his brother Battista, who trained in the studio of Raphael before joining Dosso at the Ferrara court.
Dosso had never been the subject of an exhibition, so this seemed an ideal opportunity to highlight outstanding works from the permanent collection and advance scholarship on a richly deserving painter.

Haber's Art Reviews: David Wojnarowicz and Dosso Dossi
The Met takes on Dosso Dossi, a decidedly minor Renaissance artist of "indecipherable sophistication." Dossi's gentle, streaky brushstrokes display "the perfect gift for the ineffable in nature." That gift extends right down to his notoriously wooden drawing and static poses.
Dossi, says even the standard textbook, "tamed Giorgione's hostile nature," just as Giorgione might be seen as taming his master, Bellini.
