  Wells: Orthographic diacritics
In this article we discuss the various diacritics that are so used and the problems this has given rise to in a multilingual computing environment — problems now arguably on the way to a satisfactory solution through the adoption of the international standard known as Unicode.
This Polish dot diacritic must not be confused with the acute accent, ź, which is also used in Polish and which is distinct from the dot.
For example, in Bamgboṣe 1966 the diacritic is printed as a dot in the serif font of the main text, but as a vertical line in the sans serif font of the examples.

Dot (diacritic) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When used as a diacritic mark, the term dot is usually reserved for the Interpunct (·), or to the glyphs 'combining dot above' ( ̇) and 'combining dot below' ( ̣) which may be combined with some letters of the extended Latin alphabets in use in Eastern European languages and Vietnamese.
In romanizations of Semitic languages, a dot below a consonant is used to indicate the "emphatic version" of that consonant.
The dot above lowercase i and j (and uppercase İ in Turkish) is not regarded as an independent diacritic, but rather as an integral part of the letter.

The top dot of the colon usually sits toward the top > of the x-height; the *mid*-dot should sit lower, optically midway up the x-height (which > means slightly higher than the actual halfway mark).
The top dot of a colon is typically > closer to the height of the Greek ano teleia, which aligns with the x-height (and which > should align with the cap height in all-cap settings, and with the small-cap height in > smallcap settings).
Its weight should be the same as the regular dot on the baseline for sentence periods.

Discussion Paper 2004-DP03: Changing the Mapping for the Double-Wide Diacritics from MARC8 to Unicode/UCS from the ...
This discussion paper gives a number of reasons why the use of the single double-wide diacritics may be preferable to using the two half diacritic characters, and suggests that the MARC 21 community change the official encoding in Unicode/UCS to the double-wide diacritics.
If the half diacritic characters are to be allowed in interchange when the sequences are defective, the the mapping would need to indicate that both encodings are supported.
The Unicode/UCS half diacritic characters should be exchanged or downloaded only when a sequence with half diacritic characters cannot be converted to a sequence with double-wide diacritic characters (i.e., when it is an defective sequence that the sender is unable to correct), if allowed in the mapping.

The differences are: - The dot-above diacritic fell quickly from grace and use in Irish at the same time as the font, whereas the dieresis continues to the predominant method of representing umlaut in German.
Turning now to look at what evidence as to the definition of Latg (and Latf) can be gleaned from iso15924: http://www.unicode.org/iso15924/standard/ 4.2 NOTE 1 says: "[...] ISO 15924 does not attempt to apply the character-glyph model, because it is sometimes important to identify certain script variants regardless of the encoding a given text may employ.
I expect that a book written in German at that time would have umlaut represented by diacritics rather than by 'e', which would mean that Latf must refer purely to the font and not to characters.
