 untravelled path - bowus family
The result was "dotara" which in Hindi is the general name for a two-string instrument.
Dotara's strings are held by and tightened with tapered wooden pegs fitted into tapered holes…..and since we did the tapering without specialized tools their fit is less than perfect and they would not hold unless we kept the string tension much lower than in a conventional string instrument.
Playing dotara was so much fun that we started to wonder what it would be like to play a larger deeper toned even more resonant member of our bowus family, and so we proceeded to build bass bowus, an 8 ft. long instrument with only a single string.

the body of the dotara is made from a single log of the jackfruit or marposa tree.
In this case the string for ma is generally of steel while the mooga gut strings are used for sa of the middle saptaka and pa and sa of lower saptaka.
Recently the dotara has also often come to be fitted with a number of thin sympathetic strings called tarab which are placed underneath the principal strings and function to create additional resonance.

Bapi has furthered the development of Baul music, by working mainly on its rhythmic features and by making innovations in the style of singing, although traditional instruments alone continue to be used on stage.
These include several percussionists, a flautist and a player of the dotara (an instrument of the lute family).
The dotara (whose name means "two strings", although in fact the instrument has four) is a skin-covered instrument of the lute family.

The use of Dotara, the string instrument now played with strokes or strummings, making for a few combinations of notes for accompaniment to Bhatiali, Bhaoaia and other types of songs, is a stage in the evolution of this music.
Thus the usage of accompanying string-instrument like Dotara and other types was devised in course of the development of the sense of melody.
Dotara is made of a single wood with a hollow that is covered by a skin (maybe, the skin of an iguana) and a bridge is placed on it, over which four strings run from the top-peg to the bottom.

PURNA DAS BAUL sat in a chair at the front of the stage playing the khamak, a small drum with a string attached to the head that, when plucked quickly with a plectrum, sounds roughly like a toad.
Purna's son DIBYENDU stood at the front of the stage singing and playing his dotara, a small lute on which he played the same 10 notes in various sequences the entire evening.
When he talked about the Bauls' belief that the human body is all the temple they need for worship, his tone was more condescending than it was instructive, and succeeded in reducing a rich and vibrant philosophy to a platitude as compelling as late-night paid programming.
