Geotimes - July 2002 - Antarctic Ice Shelves
The Mertz is one of the 23 ocean extensions (shelves and tongues) of the Antarctic ice sheet that Rignot and Jacobs show have rapidly melting underbellies.
Using satellite radar interferometry, a technique that measures the change in size, velocity and shape of the ice shelves, the scientists were able to precisely locate the grounding lines of 23 shelves.
Grounded ice is colored blue, floating ice is colored red, the transition from grounded to floating ice is colored blue, to light green, to yellow and red as the ice adjusts to hydrostatic equilibrium.

Ice shelf - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An ice shelf is a thick, floating platform of ice that forms where a glacier or ice sheet flows down to a coastline and onto the ocean surface.
The boundary between floating ice shelf and the grounded (resting on bedrock) ice that feeds it is called the grounding line.
The primary mechanism of mass loss from ice shelves is iceberg calving, in which a chunk of ice breaks off from the seaward front of the shelf.

Climate of Antarctica   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Map of annual snow accumulation on Antarctica Nearly all of Antarctica is covered by an ice sheet that is, on average, 2.5 kilometres thick.
Warmer temperatures are expected to lead to more snow, which would increase the amount of ice in Antarctica, offsetting approximately one third of the expected sea level rise from thermal expansion of the oceans http://www.grida.no/climate/ipcc_tar/wg1/428.htm.
Because ice flows, albeit slowly, the ice within the ice sheet is younger than the age of the sheet itself.

 SCAR » Report 13
The overall theme of the meeting was, primarily, the coordination of ice radar sounding surveys of the grounding zone of the entire Antarctic Ice Sheet, and secondarily, the coordination of surface mass balance measurements and surface ice velocities.
Establishing velocities of glaciers, ice streams, ice sheets, and ice shelves is essential to calculate the discharge of the mass balance equation.
Velocities on the shelf near the DeVicq Glacier increase westward to near 0.5 km yr -1 and reach 0.6 km yr -1 at the glacier.

Although the authors suggest that melt rates maintain the equilibrium of the Antarctic ice sheet, they estimate that a 0.1 degree Celsius increase in ocean temperatures will lead to melt increases of a meter per year.

Velocities of outlet glaciers, ice streams, and ice shelves, Antarctica, from satellite images
Yet, to understand the ice sheet dynamics fully, we must carefully document all of the coastal changes associated with advance and retreat of ice shelves, outlet glaciers, and ice streams.
A critical parameter of ice sheets is their velocity field, which, together with ice thickness, allows the determination of discharge rates.
The accuracy with which individual features of the ice tongues are correlated (from image to image) cannot be assessed, because it is confounded with the spatial variation of the velocity field.

Because the ice augers were located in boxes on top of a shelf approximately eight feet above the floor, plaintiffs requested the assistance of an employee in removing one of the boxes.
