Douay-Rheims Bible Online, The Church Or The Bible
Douay-Rheims Bible Online, The Church Or The Bible
We Catholics admit that the Bible is the Word of God, the language of inspiration, and every Catholic is exhorted to read the Bible.
But let us suppose for a moment that all had Bibles, that Bibles were written from the beginning, and that every man, woman, and child had a copy.

The Douay Rheims Bible - The Achilles heel of Papal Infallibility
I have recently purchased a copy of the Roman Catholic Douay Rheims, a reproduction of the 1899 edition that bears the Imprimatur of James Cardinal Gibbons, dated September 1, 1899.
Either the Douay Rheims is in error (along with Pius IX, infallible or not), or every single non-Catholic Bible, and even some "approved" versions for Catholics, are in error.
It is interesting to note that the Douay Rheims Bible was not translated from the Greek or Hebrew texts, but rather from the Latin Vulgate, itself a translation by St. Jerome (342-420 A.D.), although it does say it was "compared with the Hebrew, Greek, and other editions in divers languages".

Why Should You Read Only the Douay-Rheims Bible
As Pope Pius XII stated in his 1943 encyclical letter Divino Afflante Spiritu, this means the Vulgate is "free from any error whatsoever in matters of faith and morals." And the Douay-Rheims bible is a faithful, word-for-word translation of the Latin Vulgate Bible of St. Jerome.
They gave ten reasons, ending up by stating that the Latin Vulgate "is not only better then al other Latin translations, but then the Greek text itself, in those places where they disagree." (Preface to the Rheims New Testament, 1582).
It became the standard Catholic Bible in English until the mid-20th century (when the Confraternity Bible was published).

Newman Reader - Rheims & Douay Bible
Such is the history of the Rheims and Douay Bible, of which there have been two editions of the Old Testament, 1609-10 and 1635, and eight (including the New York Protestant reprint) of the New, 1582, 1600, 1621, 1633, 1738, 1788, 1816-1818, and 1834.
That he recognised the justice of the complaint which they urged against the size which had been selected for the Rheims and Douay, may be argued from the circumstance, that he prints his own edition, not in folio or quarto, but in 12mo.

Catholic Culture : Document Library : Uncomfortable Facts About The Douay-Rheims
Consequently, an edition of the New Testament was prepared and released in 1582 at Rheims, France, and an edition of the Old Testament was prepared and released in 1609 at the French town of Douay.
Today, all Douay-Rheims Bibles in print are actually the Douay-Rheims-Challoner version.
It is apologetically significant in dealing with two groups: anti-Catholics who deny the existence of vernacular translations before the King James Version (KJV) and certain Catholic Traditionalists who insist on using only the Douay.

 The Holy Bible (Douay-Rheims)
I chose the Douay-Rheims version because it is a faithful translation of St. Jerome's Latin Vulgate Bible, which he translated from the original Hebrew and Greek, roughly 1500 years ago.
Passages in the Douay-Rheims Bible may appear obscure at times because the translators, not wanting to take away from the original meanings, tried to translate exactly.
When a passage seemed unintelligible, they left it alone, so as not to loose the original meanings.

About the Douay Rheims HTML Bible
Although the Bibles in use at the present day by the Catholics of England and Ireland are popularly styled the Douay Version, they are most improperly so called; they are founded, with more or less alteration, on a series of revisions undertaken by Bishop Challoner in 1749-52.
In the year 1578, owing to political troubles, the college was temporarily transferred from Douai (which was then in the dominions of the King of Spain) to Reims, and during its sojourn there, in 1582, the New Testament was published, and became consequently known as the "Rheims Testament".
His object was to meet the practical want felt by the Catholics of his day of a Bible moderate in size and price, in readable English, and with notes more suitable to the time.

 The Douay-Rheims Bible
Regarded from the point of view of scholarship, the Rheims and Douai Bible is of no importance, marking retrogression rather than advance; but it needs mention in a history of the English Bible, because it is one of the versions of which King James' translators made use.
The Authorized Version is indeed distinguished by the strongly English (as distinct from Latin) character of its vocabulary; but of the Latin words used (and used effectively), many were derived from the Bible of Rheims and Douai.
The Old Testament is stated to have been ready at the same time, but for want of funds it could not be printed until 1609, after the college had returned to Douai, when it appeared just in time to be of some use to the preparers of King James' version.
