Topic: Double Cluster

SCYON: Paper abstracts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
The h and Chi Per "double cluster" is examined using wide-field (0.98 deg x 0.98 deg) CCD UBV imaging supplemented by optical spectra of several hundred of the brightest stars.
We discuss the uniqueness of the double cluster, citing other examples of such structures in the literature, but concluding that the nearly identical nature of the two cluster cores is unusual.
We fail to settle the long-standing controversy regarding whether or not the double cluster is the core of the Per OB1 association, and argue that this may be unanswerable with current techniques.

ESA - Science - Home - Double Star overview
Double Star is a joint ESA/Chinese project to study the effects of the Sun on Earth's environment, and in particular the 'magnetotail', where storms of high-energy particles are generated.
A key aspect of ESA's participation in the Double Star project is the inclusion of seven instruments that are identical to those currently flying on the four Cluster spacecraft.
In September 1999, the ESA Director-General was invited by the Administrator of the China National Space Administration (CNSA) to discuss the collaboration on the Double Star programme.

Patent 4058546: Alkoxysilane double cluster compounds with silicone bridges and their preparation and use   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
These cluster compounds, however, are single cluster compounds in contrast to the double clusters of the present invention.
In the method for preparing these alkoxysilanol cluster reactants, a trihalosilane or a silicon tetrahalide is reacted with a trialkoxysilanol in the presence of a hydrogen halide acceptor base, and optionally, a solvent, to obtain an intermediate compound which is subsequently reacted with water to produce the cluster compound reactant of Formula II.
The double cluster compounds display these properties both in substantially pure form and in mixture with excess alkoxysilanol cluster reactant defined in Equation A. Accordingly, the invented compounds have been found to be particularly useful as functional fluids.

NGC 185 is an unusual double star cluster lying in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way.
The double cluster, named NGC 1850 and shown in the adjacent image, spans 96 light years.
The estimated 10,000 blue and white stars in the large center cluster are 50 million years old and most have masses less than 10 solar masses.

 CNN.com - Hubble spies exotic double cluster - July 10, 2001
The double cluster, known as NGC 1850, is a dense collection of juvenile, globular-like stars, and the second brightest star cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud.
The NGC 1850 cluster consists of a main clump in the center of the image as well as a smaller, younger bunch to the lower right, composed of exceptionally hot blue stars and fainter red ones, known as T-Tauri stars.
The nebulous filaments that encompass NGC 1850 are thin wisps of gas, the eerie remnants of supernovae explosions that rocked the central cluster millions of years ago, according to astronomers.

 CHAPTER 8
As in the star cluster, the resu It is an eyuilibrium between the inward motion of the outer particles and the outward motion of the inner particles.
Furthermore, the H–R diagram of this cluster, which indicates its stellar composition, is almost identical with that of a late type globular cluster, such as M 13, whereas the stars of the open clusters that are now seen to be older, are mainly main sequence stars, comparable to the general population in their environment.
As the clusters are pulled slowly in toward the Galaxy gravitationally, the atom–building processes that are under way in all matter inerease the proportion of heavy elements, while at the same time the differential gravitational effects reduce the cluster mass.

The double cluster NGC 1850, found in one of our neighboring galaxies, the Large Magellanic Cloud, is an eye-catching object.
The two components of the cluster are both relatively young and consist of a main, globular-like cluster in the center and an even younger, smaller cluster, seen below and to the right, composed of extremely hot, blue stars and, fainter red T-Tauri stars.
One of Hubble's main contributions to the study of NGC 1850 is in the investigation of star formation at both ends of the stellar mass scale — the low-mass T-Tauri stars and the high-mass OB stars.

Burnham's describes the Double Cluster thusly, "Among the all-time favorites for amateur observers, it may be seen without optical aid as a hazy patch of light about midway between the stars of Perseus and the familiar "W" of Cassiopeia.
It appears that the clusters are relatively close to one another in space; their relative distances differ by only about 7%.
Another thing to consider while gazing at their beauty is that the stars that make up these clusters are pretty young as stars go; they were formed out of giant molecular cloud complexes in a wink of an eye ago (on cosmic timescales).
