Negative can also be a synonym for "no," and as in judgment, can signify disapproval.

double negative | double negative: a website about michael heizer | tarasen.net
Double Negative was among the first "earthworks," artworks created as part of a movement known as "land art" or "earth art." Earthworks are contemporary artworks that use as their canvas or medium the earth itself.
Double Negative, though a notable piece of art, is essentially no more than a big trench (and even then, not a complete trench, as it crosses empty space).
In that the artwork is itself negative space (and when it crosses empty space, it is doubly negative space, as the title suggests), it begs meditation on the principle of art as creation, when Heizer has not in fact added but substracted.

Michael Heizer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the late 1960s, however, Heizer left New York City for the deserts of California and Nevada, where he began to produce larger-scale works that could not fit into a museum setting, except perhaps in photographs.
This culminated in the production of Double Negative, a 1500-ft trench Heizer cut into the side of a mesa in the Nevada desert.
Since then, Heizer has continued his exploration of earthworks, with his efforts directed primarily toward City, an enormous complex in the rural desert of Lincoln County, Nevada.

Earthworks are site-specific artworks in which the land itself is the medium, manipulated by the artist.
An early example of this phenomenon was Heizer's Double Negative of 1969/70 which was a double trench cut into the top of a high desert mesa in Nevada, displacing 240,000 tons of earth.
The artists were interested in nature's effect on the artwork (how it weathered and eroded), but not on the artwork's effect on nature.

The preservation of contemporary artworks presents a challenge to museums like the Guggenheim, which are confronted with technological obsolescence, deterioration of materials, and varied installation requirements.
Seeing Double: Emulation in Theory and Practice pairs artworks in endangered mediums side by side with their re-created doubles--and sometimes triples--in newer mediums, offering visitors a unique opportunity to judge whether the emulated works capture the spirit of the originals.
When manipulation of hardware is critical to the artwork, as with the electronic sculptures by Nam June Paik or John F. Simon, Jr., emulation may not be as appropriate for the short term as migrating the original components to their up-to-date equivalents.
