Covalent bonding is a form of chemical bonding characterized by the sharing of one or more pairs of electrons, by two atoms, in order to produce a mutual attraction; atoms tend to share electrons, so as to fill their outer electron shells.
Their work was based on the valence bond model, which assumes that a chemical bond is formed when there is good overlap between the atomic orbitals of participating atoms.
Normally the double bond is of the cis- or Z-configuration, although some fatty acids with trans- or E-double bonds are known.

Carbon-carbon double bond - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A carbon to carbon double bond refers to the bond state of the carbon carbon atom, which is bonded by two types of bonds together, which is the sigma bond and the pi bond.
A carbon-carbon double bond is shorter and stronger than that of its single counterpart.
This bond is the main component of the alkene functional group.

Peptide bond - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The C-N bond has a partial double bond character (with the Nitrogen atom attaining a partial positive charge and the oxygen atom a partial negative charge) and the molecule can normally not rotate around this bond.
The peptide bonds in proteins are metastable, meaning that in the presence of water they will break spontaneously, releasing about 10 kJ/mol of free energy, but this process is extremely slow.
The wavelength of absorbance for a peptide bond is 220-280nm.

 Pi Bonds
The combination of a sigma and a pi bond between the same two carbon atoms is a double bond.
A double bond consists of a sigma bond (using hybrid orbitals) and a pi bond (using p orbitals).
These models might lead you to think that double bonds are formed by some kind of process, in which normal single bonds are bent around to form a curved bond, but that is just not true at all.

bonding in carbonyl compounds - the carbon oxygen double bond
Where the carbon-oxygen double bond, C=O, occurs in organic compounds it is called a carbonyl group.
We are going to look at the bonding in methanal, but it would equally apply to any other compound containing C=O. The interesting thing is the nature of the carbon-oxygen double bond - not what it's attached to.
This distortion in the pi bond causes major differences in the reactions of compounds containing carbon-oxygen double bonds like methanal compared with compounds containing carbon-carbon double bonds like ethene.

Double Bond Polyurethane, Urethane Rubber Custom Molded Parts
Double Bond Polyurethane is a unique material that offers the elasticity of rubber combined with the toughness and durability of metal.
Because Double Bond polyurethane is available in a very broad hardness range (eraser-soft to bowling-ball hard), it allows the engineer to replace rubber, plastic and metal with the ultimate in abrasion-resistance and physical properties.
The hardness of most practical products of "Double Bond" ranges between 20 durometer A and 75 durometer D. The D scale is used to measure hardness greater than 95A.

Covalent Bond   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Covalent bonds are formed as a result of the sharing of one or more pairs of bonding electrons.
A single co-valent bond would be the sharing of two electrons between the two bonded atoms.
The dash is symbolic of the bonding pair.

 covalent bonding - double bonds
A double covalent bond is where two pairs of electrons are shared between the atoms rather than just one pair.
An ordinary line represents a bond in the plane of the screen (or the paper if you've printed it), a broken line is a bond going back away from you, and a wedge shows a bond coming out towards you.
All double bonds (whatever atoms they might be joining) will consist of a sigma bond and a pi bond.

 AW: Carbon, Double-Bond
Bond geometry: trigonal (three equidistant orbitals in a flat plane)
Notes: this carbon has the same properties as the single-bonded carbon, except that two of the four orbitals are bonding in the same direction, forming a "double bond." This double bond is about twice as strong as a single bond, and does not allow rotation to occur.
While you're here, notice how the double bond makes the carbon bonding structure into 3 directions, called trigonal pyrimidal (or a "3-sided pyramid").

Olefins are aliphatic hydrocarbons with one or more double bonds along the chain.
The higher olefins have chains of up to 20 or more carbon atoms, and generally have the double bond between the first two carbons of the chain.
These are based on carbon compounds and form the backbone of the petrochemicals industry, while inorganic chemicals are non-carbon chemicals, such as mineral acids, alkalis, chlorine, hydrogen peroxide and various salts.

Markovnikov's rule states that with the addition of HX, H2O, or ROH to an alkene, the higher priority substituent adds to the more highly substituted carbon of the carbon-carbon double bond, and the hydrogen adds to the carbon that has more hydrogens.
In elimination reactions, the major reaction product is the alkene with the more highly substituted double bond.
This most-substituted alkene is also the most stable.
