  Double bass at AllExperts
The name "double bass" may be derived from the double bass' size, since it is approximately twice as large as the cello, or because the double bass was originally used to double the cello part an octave lower.
The double bass also differs from members of the violin family in that the shoulders are (sometimes) sloped, the back is often angled (both to allow easier access to the instrument, particularly in the upper range) and machine heads are almost always used for tuning.
Double bass rosin is generally softer and stickier than violin rosin, to allow the hair to grab the strings better, but players use a wide variety of rosins that vary from quite hard (like violin rosin) to quite soft, depending on the weather, the humidity, and the skill and preference of the player.

Double stop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A double stop, in music terminology, is the act of playing two notes simultaneously on a melodic percussion instrument or stringed instrument, for example a violin, a viola, a cello or a guitar.
When playing rock guitar styles, the most common form of double stop is a perfect fifth (or its inversion, a perfect fourth), which is one type of power chord.
These double stops are often found in distorted, over-driven guitar parts where the tempo is such that the full chord cannot be played or the sound would be too muddied, though they are also common in quieter rock and blues music.

ACS Music Modules: Cello Performance - Double Stops
Double stops on the violin, viola, cello, and double bass occur when two strings are played at the same time.
Beyond the limitation of physical reach, the next important consideration in double stops is the difficult interval of the perfect fifth on the violin, viola, and cello and the corresponding interval on the string bass - the perfect fourth.
Double stops requiring two fingers to stop notes and which include slides in contrary motion or slides on only one string are more restrictive.

To help prevent double vision related to head trauma, wear a seat belt with a shoulder harness while driving, and wear protective goggles and headgear during sporting activities and at work, if your work carries a high risk of eye injury.
Double vision caused by a medical or neurological disease may improve by treating the disease.

The first note of the double stop is the melody note you wish to play (say a "C" note in the key of "C").
Your double stop harmony note would be any other note of the "C" Scale that is higher in pitch than the melody note.
Just remember to start the scale with the lowest-pitched note of the double stop pair on the first note of the scale and keep the fingering relationships the same for the rest of the scale.

The instrument was appealing to the jazz musician and quickly appeared in rock n' roll, country groups, and eventually in the new emerging Motown sound.

The bass guitar (as in most stringed instruments) is capable of double stops, or sounding two strings simultaneously.

Another way to judge the intonation of a double stops is by listening for difference tones.
After enough practice, you get to the point where most of the time, you can tell whether a double stop is in tune without having to consciously listen for beats or difference tones.
A good exercise for getting the intonation right in a passage of double stops is to split the line up and concentrate on the intonation of just the bottom or top set of notes.

Double stops are less definite entities than chords in that the same double stop can be found in several different chords.
The other common double stop is the 6th, which is two 3rd's added together.
Double stops can be much more complex however, and much more interesting to play and listen to.

Thus, the picture is like this: the `double' stops have no aspiration, the plain ones accompany some, and the aspirated stops have plenty.
In other words, the plain stops are the neutral of all, allowing for some amount of aspiration which are in some sense expected to naturally occur in articulating stops.
I have a hunch that the `glottalization' view might well be a relic of the era of generative phonology; existence of a three varying degrees of distinction sure was taken as a serious threat to the binary opposition of features, which was one of the major tenets of the theory.

After practicing Dounis Opus 12, which, to my astonishment is all double stops, I finally figured out something practical and truthful about playing double stops: the fingers are the easy part.
When we play fifths, whether they are open or stopped, we are dealing with exactly the same length of string for both notes, so the bow shouldn't have to do much compensating.
But once in a while, if the bow isn't exactly straight, or if the contact with both strings is not exactly equal, or if the strings are out of tune, the exciting magical resonaces that happen when playing fifths seem to "fight" with one another for rank in the overtone series.

To stop the string, the violinist will put down a finger- their pointer finger (called "1"- which always throws me off in piano fingerings, because with those, the thumb is "1"), their middle finger "2", their ring finger "3", or their pinky finger "4".
To make a chord, violinists put down fingers on more than one string and then drag the bow across all the strings want to play, which must be consecutive, btw.
Use it for a real "ringy" sound especially if the chord is one for a sharps key sig, like A D G or E (hey, the open strings of the violin.
