 Moths of Northamptonshire
This is a distinctive pug which presumably would not have been overlooked prior to the first record in 1945 and therefore must have increased its range within the county in the second half of the last century.
This was the most common species of pug moth recorded in the static Pitsford Reservoir light traps for the five years from 1999 to 2003 with eighty-eight examples seen overall.

Holly - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The flowers are sometimes eaten by the larva of the Double-striped Pug moth.
During winter storms, birds often take refuge in hollies, which provide shelter, protection from predators (by the spiny leaves), and food.

Then there is the double stripe mentioned in the name of the moth.
In most other pugs the basic color is either grey or greyish brown.
The caterpillar of the Olive Moth is found on a great number of shrubs and lower plants, such as holly, gorse, wild and cultivated heather, ragwort etc. The larvae don't usually eat the leaves, but prefer flowers and fruits.

 mothstrappingresultsjanmay2004
Double-striped Pug was the first of the year and only the second area record.
New for the area was the Rustic Shoulder-knot, whilst White-spotted Pug was the first here since 2001.
Highlight was the Lunar Marbled Brown total, with nearly all examples appearing within the first hour of trapping.

 Lancashire Moths 2002
Other Pugs reported were White-spotted from Pennington Flash, Ochreous and Dwarf from Orrel, Grey, Mottled and Oak-tree from Burrow Heights, Lancaster, a late Double-striped from Preston and Marsh Pug from Flixton.
Despite the occasional Oak Beauty, Early Thorn, Pebble Prominent, Streamer and Double-striped Pug from various locations together with a double bill of Tawny and Pale Pinion from Flixton, numbers were generally very poor.
Checks of various moorland-edge sites in both the south and north of the county all turned up Glaucous Shears, sometimes into double figures and in the Trough of Bowland area they were joined by Dark Brocade, Ochreous Pug and Autumn-green Carpet.

Dog Details, Meaning Dog Article and Explanation Guide
The Asian wolf also probably combined with descendants of the European wolf to create the Mastiffs—the Tibetan Mastiff being an example of a very ancient breed—leading eventually to the development of such diverse breeds as the Pug, the Saint Bernard, and the Bloodhound.
Merle: Marbled coat with darker patches and spots of the specified color; for example, a blue merle is marbled gray and blue with black and sometimes white patches; a red (or liver) merle has deep red or brown on lighter red, often with white or black mixed in.
Recent genetic evidence shows that most modern dog breeds are related to Asian canines, contradicting earlier hypothoses that the dog, like humans, had evolved originally in Africa.

Heather is a popular ornamental plant in gardens, with many named cultivars selected for variation in flower colour.
The larva of Lepidoptera species including Emperor Moth, The Engrailed, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Autumnal Rustic, True Lover's Knot and Ingrailed Clay also feed on the plant.

This Double-striped Pug, caught at a lighted window at Fair Isle Observatory, constitutes the first record of this species for Shetland.
Of interest, the first Striped Hawkmoth for Faroe was recorded on 5th August.
There were at least 3, probably 4, Convolvulus Hawkmoths at North-a-Voe, Mid Yell and another in Mid Yell.

Satin Lutestring, Bilberry Pug and Common Fan-foot are not found elsewhere in the county and Great Oak Beauty has not been recorded anywhere else in recent years.
Other very local Worcestershire moths were Clay Triple-lines, Alder Kitten, Plain Wave, Lead-coloured Pug and Beautiful Snout.
Grass Wave (only otherwise found at Hartlebury Common and Devil's Spittleful) seems to have been the first Wyre Forest record since Les Evans prior to 1960.

 UTB Moths
Double Square-spot was the most numerous at 17 and there were two new additions to my 2004 list - Heart and Club and Smoky Wainscot, but none for the UTB list.
David Redhead reports a Double Kidney caught in his last overnight moth trap on 30/31 July along with another 45 species.
Identifying the Pugs still usually defeats me and the above identification is thanks to Martin Townsend.

The first Double-striped Pug of the year was trapped in the Obs moth traps.
The first butterfly of the year - a Small Tortoiseshell at the Bill - was seen today.
The first fairly mild night of the year produced nothing more in the moth-traps than a few Winter Moths.

 Moths seen in Santa Engracia
The Oak Hawk-moth Marumba quercus is present, as are the wonderfully streamlined Spurge and Striped Hawks and the day-flying Hummingbird Hawk.
Three species that are extinct in Britain, the Essex Emerald, Spotted Sulphur and Gypsy Moth have been captured, along with some of the most striking moths that visit Britain as rare migrants: The Passenger, Lunar Double-stripe and The Alchymist.
Among those that have been recorded at the house or in nearby locations are the delicately beautiful Spanish Moon Moth and the stunning Giant Peacock with the largest wing span of any European species.

BirdForum - Help needed to ID some moths.
From what ive found i think that 2 may be a Dogs tooth, 3 may be a Double striped pug and 4 might be a Grey pine carpet but im not sure on these and i havent a clue on No.1.
#3 and #4 Agreed with Double-striped Pug and Grep Pine Carpet.
I don't think it is Toadflax Pug (on the basis of the angle of part of one of the cross-lines).
