Family name - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The second was usually the name of the godfather or godmother, while the third and last given name was the name used in everyday situations.
It is extremely rare for men in Western countries to take the name of their wives; this was chiefly done in the Middle Ages, when a man from a low-born family was marrying an only daughter from a higher-status family, and was thus designated to carry on his wife's family name.
A family name, or surname, is the part of a person's name that indicates to what family he or she belongs.

GENUKI: What's in a Name, HULLAND, from "The Peak Advertiser", Derbyshire
The expression "double-barrelled name" first occurs in print in 1848 though it had applied to firearms since the beginning of the 1700's.
Among such great land-owning classes, their family names were positively venerated since their bearers had, at various times been engaged in shaping the history of our country.
For example, if a new name was added to a surname under which a Peerage had been conferred, a Royal License was needed - hence in 1795 the 4th Duke of Portland was permitted to add "Scott" to "Cavendish".

Three names are essential to placement but the pragmatic English speaker is thoroughly wedded to the convention of first and last being sufficient.
The design of the domain name system is such that saturated (maximum or extreme) hyphenation of any word or words can only take one form.
In light of this, the domain naming system born in the early 1990s has yet to mature into a modern set of rules that will grant it the status of acceptable English as against techno-babble.
