Topic: Doubletracking

Automatic double tracking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During the 1950s it was discovered that doubletracking lead vocals in popular song recordings gave them a much stronger and more appealing sound (especially for singers with weak or light voices).
He developed it mainly at the instigation of John Lennon, who hated the tedious doubletracking sessions and regularly expressed a desire for a technical solution to the problem.
However, the doubletracking effect relied on the almost inaudible millisecond delays between the guide vocal and the doubletracked vocal.

Doubletracking - QuickSeek Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Doubletracking is an audio recording technique, in which a performer sings or plays along with their own prerecorded part, for dramatic effect or to produce a stronger sound than with a single voice or instrument.
Artificial or automatic doubletracking, also known as ADT, was developed at Abbey Road Studios by engineers recording the Beatles in the 1960s.
John Lennon referred to his home-studio technique of overdubbing sounds with a pair of tape recorders to make song demos as "doubletracking", but this usage isn't technically correct; rather than laying the same part over, Lennon would normally add different parts to the originals.

The album represented a number of stylistic advancements and hence a new sophistication that had not been seen in a rock album before.
Indeed, the album represents the first use of automatic doubletracking or ADT.
This replaced the previous doubletracking technique in which a singer would have to sing a vocal again or a musican would have to play an instrumental piece again, careful to synchronise everything with the original.

But it seems a safe bet that the initial recordings were made in this hall, as a live band (everybody playing together), and were then patched up a bit for the live album with both traditional mixing and mastering as well as some doubletracking.
That in itself isn't necessarily proof of doubletracking in Christine's case (there are occasions when she played electric piano and organ together, like on "Dreams" chorus) but it highly suggests it.
The acoustic piano is different because it isn't close enough in proximity to the organ.

Lovely Room has a wonderfully redemptive moment, though – the guitar solo that bestrides the tune is quite… well, lovely.
Doubletracking and what sounds like pitch-shifting push something that’s certainly not a Steve Vai-style solo into the realm of the beautiful.
Unfortunately, it’s not enough to lift the disc out of the general bland area it’s resting in.

I think this is a wise choice, for while singer Brian Strazek attacks the lyrics with a confident presence, the times when he's left all alone and the band quiets down feel like the most dangerous as far as the band losing fans.
His wobbly voice benefits much from doubletracking and a perfect example is on Fuseloge where nice soaring choruses are strong contrast to the near derailment of the earlier bare voice intro.
If you move beyond the sometimes distracting "character" in his voice, the songs can be quite beautiful.

It’s a quiet, reflective piece, just Annette and a muted jazz guitar as background, with nice camerawork of her under the firelight.
This could have been a beautiful, sensitive musical sequence, but it isn’t; the doubletracking and echo applied to Annette’s vocal is seriously overdone, which makes her and the song sound canned and artificial.
That’s unfortunate, because it’s one of the few ballads written for these films that had not only a nice melody but also comparatively intelligent lyrics.

Rolling Stone : Stevie Wonder: Where I'm Coming From : Music Reviews
At its worst, in "Do Yourself A Favor" and "I Wanna Talk to You," both more than five minutes, Wonder gets so hung up on exploring this virtuosity that he runs it into the ground.
Failing to realize that an extravagant vocal style draws a great deal of its strength from a contrasting, coolly-controlled arrangement which will set it off to greatest effect, Wonder tends to sink everything in thick studio veneer; the use of doubletracking for vocal self-accompaniment is especially overused.
The most successful cuts, "Think of Me as Your Soldier" and "If You Really Love Me," are short, unassuming love songs, pleasant vehicles for the Wonder charm.

This is the sort of setup that means that anything less than strong songwriting will see the music flounder -- something that occasionally happens, though it's usually overridden by the croaky appeal of Dizozza's voice.
"No Problem There" hits the same sort of stridency that drove Billy Joel back when he was still writing compelling material, and contains some ballsy piano playing that is the first hint -- along with some pretty nifty vocal doubletracking, in places -- that Dizozza can hammer together a great tune.
Sure, the form that he's writing in can sound a little limiting at times, but there are some sly guitar additions, and some pretty liquid lyricism -- "The Song Of Laughter And Forgetting"'s Freudian bus-ride, for example -- that can carry over any background cheesiness.
