Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt Album Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
This album seemed reminiscent of Illmatic, as Jay-Z was influenced by the legend (with whom he’d later have a beef with for the hip hop history books) — and he even samples Nas on Dead Presidents.
Both albums were dropped by New York hustlers with brutally honest street experiences with enough quotables and clever wordplay to write a novel.
For first time listeners, this album is almost like a “gateway” album: once you start listening to it, you’ll discover a whole new level of rap, and want as many albums like this as you can find.

No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom Review - sputnikmusic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
It's a good album for those who can appreciate ska and can endure the poppy melodies, which is certainly not a problem for me. The album doesn't contain a lot of variation, except for the beautiful ballad 'Don't speak'.
This album is on the Rolling stone 500 best albums list, and perhaps it deserves its spot there, but I fear that it is solely there due to the immense popularity of No Doubt and Gwen Stefani in particular.
No Doubt's music is instantly recognizable, mostly because of Gwen's voice, but it was a brilliantly produced album, the lyrics were intuitive and well thought-out, and it produced 5 hits.

With the hit single “Hey Baby” riding high on the charts as well as their album Rock Steady holding at #20 on the Billboard 200 chart, No Doubt seem to be on a crash course with success once again.
This album is filled with songs that are radical departure from signature No Doubt the public is used to.
While maintaining the ska/rock/pop genre No Doubt are known for, they have been able to throw some other elements of surprise to the mix.

No Doubt (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
No Doubt is the self-titled debut album by pop/ska/rock band No Doubt, released 17 March 1992 on the Interscope Records record label (see 1992 in music).
During their career No Doubt have experimented with many differing musical styles, playing a major role in the third wave ska revival, but their first album is generally considered to be a ska punk album, albeit with New Wave influences unusual for the genre.
Although the album failed to meet the hopes of the record company, in the years after the album the band built on the solid musical repertoire showcased within it and constructed an impressive live reputation.

she's pretty much the main songwriter for no doubt so it would just be her with different musicians if she did a solo album.
To say that Gwen Stefani is the "main" songwriter of No Doubt would be unfair to the rest of the band, since they all write to some extent.
It is all part of a process for me, sort of an extension of the challenge No Doubt gave ourselves on "Rock Steady." I want to explore all of this during the No Doubt hiatus.

Rock Steady - No Doubt / Album Review / nosmiles's Music Page
It seems as though this album is intended for a younger, less mature audience than their previous album, "Return of Saturn." The song "Making Out" is my best example for this idea.
Most of the relationship songs however are happy, which makes the album more pleasant even over the somber countenance of the album.
The most entertaining prospect of the album is that No Doubt managed to pull off all the sounds collaged into this album.

 No Doubt
No Doubt signs a "big" recording contract with Interscope Records; they continue driving around O.C. in their old cars and work day jobs (Gwen and Tony are sales people at the same department store, Adrian waits tables at a steak house, and Tom runs a small music equipment rental business).
No Doubt kicks off an eight-city West Coast club tour in San Diego in full pop gear: Tony and Tom wear red jumpsuits, the horn section in lime green, Gwen in bubblegum pink (including her feathered hair), and Adrian shirtless and in boxers.
No Doubt ends 2000 with an award show (presenters at the Billboard Music Awards), performance on the tube (MTV's Fashionably Loud, selection: "Bathwater." Gwen also performs "South Side" with Moby.), and a special live performance at the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas in L.A. Return of Saturn is still on the charts (#120).

The band were extremely popular in their native California, but this upbeat, ska influenced album was lost amongst the depressive, downbeat grunge music that dominated the scene at the time.
The album isn't as tight as their later album, but that can be attributed to their rawness in the studio.

Gwen Stefani: Love.Angel.Music.Baby. - PopMatters Music Review
To the (few) remaining No Doubt fans who hopped on board because of the band's early ties to So-Cal punk and ska, those who vastly prefer the band's rock side and wished they indulged less in the pop world: You can definitely skip this one.
This album is more distinctly "pop" than any No Doubt album, but it also makes some major artistic reaches, especially in its attempt to meld the best of current Top 40 hip-hop with charging, synth-driven late '80s pop and then layering the package with distinct references to modern Japanese pop culture.
It's damn weird for an album that sounds so distinctly Top 40; and several writing collaborations with Linda Perry (that former 4 Non Blondes singer, again) underscore that the closest comparison is to Pink's 2001 genre-buster M!ssundaztood, though Gwen is less angry (and frankly, lyrically adept) but more musically adventurous.

While Bathwater was somewhat of a letdown, the rest of this album is incredible, blending punk, ska, pop, and rock together to create the album I had always dreamed they would release.
No Doubt, throughout their 15-odd year career, have been many things: underground ska sensation, mainstream ska sensation, crossover legends, Grammy winners, dancehall-lite platinum sellers -- but throughout it all, they retained a style of effervescence while delivering profound lyrics over bitingly powerful melodies.

While no song that has been played to death on the radio is missing (and even for people that rarely listen to the radio overkill is the first word that comes to mind) there is one criticism: given their captivating energy onstage one wonders why there aren't any live takes on The Singles 1992-2003.

There is absolutely no doubt that Michael Beinhorn is the hottest producer on the planet.
