The Scarecrow is upset when Professor Woggle-bug tells him that he has no family, so he goes to where Dorothy Gale found him to trace his 'roots'.
Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion search for him, eventually meeting with a knight, Sir Hokus, the Doubtful Dromedary and the Comfortable Camel.
Although Thompson has a different style of writing which comes as a bit of a shock, it is a fantastic first effort on her part.

Eothen - CHAPTER XXI   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
HE "dromedary" of Egypt and Syria is not the two-humped animal described by that name in books of natural history, but is, in fact, of the same family as the camel, to which it stands in about the same relation as a racer to a cart-horse.
The trot of the dromedary is a pace terribly disagreeable to the rider, until he becomes a little accustomed to it; but after the first half-hour I so far schooled myself to this new exercise, that I felt capable of keeping it up (though not without aching limbs) for several hours together.
You ride the dromedary in the same fashion; you are perched rather than seated on a bunch of carpets or quilts upon the summit of the hump.

 Book Review
The use of camels in the mountains, deserts, and plateaus of the American West has long intrigued students of the region's history and lore.
The general public is most familiar with the one-humped dromedary camels used by the United States government in its 1858 survey of the 35th Parallel.
Three Caravans to Yuma succeeds in presenting a portion of the "untold story" of the two-humped camels, but it is doubtful that the volume will be " the last word on the Bactrian experiment." Indeed, the subject of camel freighting in the West deserves further synthesis and interpretation.

Archaeologists uncover remains of a giant camel - 09 Oct 2006 - NZ Herald: Science News from New Zealand and around the ...
The ancient camel would have stood approximately three meters tall, almost twice the size of modern day camels, and was apparently killed by humans as it drank from a spring.
The find is scientifically remarkable not only because of the species' incredible size but also because it proves that the dromedary camel species existed in the area at a much earlier date than had been previously thought - possibly as much as 90,000 years earlier.
Bone fragments were also found in numerous different layers of rock suggesting the giant camels had existed in the region for thousands of years.

The other possibility is the local Aboriginal word 'cubago' which some sources claim was used to describe Mount Dromedary.
This also seems doubtful as the local Aboriginal community now insist that Dromedary is correctly named 'Gulaga' - about as far from 'Cubargo' as you could get.
William Duggan Tarlinton was the first white man to set foot in the Cobargo district, in February 1829.

It is immaterial for us whether a multitude of doubtful forms be called species or sub-species or varieties; what rank, for instance, the two or three hundred doubtful forms of British plants are entitled to hold, if the existence of any well-marked varieties be admitted.
Yet the advantage of plumed seeds no doubt stands in the closest relation to the land being already thickly clothed by other plants; so that the seeds may be widely distributed and fall on unoccupied ground.
A few naturalists, endowed with much flexibility of mind, and who have already begun to doubt on the immutability of species, may be influenced by this volume; but I look with confidence to the future, to young and rising naturalists, who will be able to view both sides of the question with impartiality.

Unless essays and EC's were that much more spectacular (which I doubt) the EA/ED kids were generally weaker applicants than the RD kids, not to say that they didn't deserve to go to wherever they were accepted just that colleges are generally lying whenever they try to deny that the EA/ED is easier than RD.
