The Doubtful Sound (45°18′ S 166°59′ E) is a fjord on the south west corner of New Zealand, close to the smaller but more-often-toured Milford Sound.
Doubtful Sound was named Doubtful Harbour by Captain Cook, who did not enter the inlet as he was uncertain whether it was navigable under sail.
The waters of Doubtful Sound are home to abundant sea creatures, including many species of fish, starfish, sea anemones and corals.

Doubtful Sound is the only fjord altered by additional freshwater input from the Manapouri hydroelectric power station (HEPS).
Based on these temporal and spatial descriptions, it is hypothesised that diatom growth in Doubtful Sound is promoted by mixing of the phosphate deplete/high silicic acid LSL and the silicic acid deplete/high phosphate SL, at a depth in the upper water column where irradiance levels are adequate to sustain photosynthesis.
In Doubtful Sound, the constant input of high silicic acid via the HEPS discharge was associated with a persistant diatom community, which was not present in the relatively low freshwater/silicic acid waters of most non-HEPS fjords all dominated by flagellates.
