If no cartridge is inserted, of course, the GBA sits there and there are no extra controls.
No, it's not a hidden Zelda game, but it lets you trade islands with another GBA with Animal Island running.
These games are identical to the original games, with the exception that multi-player menu options have been removed, since there is no link code to support it and the original games required two controllers for two players.

The usual PS2 affair with Final Fantasy remains at the prime top spot with Kingdom Hearts 2 also, and strangely enough Resident Evil 4 (Biohazzard) for the PS2, which is odd due to the lack of any solid announcements for that port.
Another notable addition is Doubutsu no Mori DS that's unfortunately sunk a few places to 16th.

Until recently my favorite startup logo was Zelda, but at my wife's request I grabbed "Doubutsu no Mori (J) " and I loved the "N" for this game so much I screenshotted it and made it my wallpaper.
The screenshot I've attached is just 320x240 and it's hard to see how pretty this logo is. There are other nice and creative uses of the logo, like Conker tearing it up with the chainsaw, but graphically I think this one is the most attractive.
If the idea of having a sweet "N" logo as your rig's wallpaper sounds cool, give "Doubutsu no Mori" a try.

Doubutsu no Mori e-Plus - Reader Review - GameFAQs
Doubutsu no Mori e+ (Which will henceforth be referred to as 'Animal Forest e+') is an upgraded version of both Animal Forest, and Animal Crossing.
Included with the game is a free upgraded version of the e-Reader hardware (the same version that the U.S. received) which finally allows Japanese gamers to scan the special cards directly into the game.
This is no Final Fantasy, but considering the type of game this is, it doesn't need a compelling story.
