BANDOW: I think that one has to recognize that religion, at least in my view, certainly Christianity, is a world view for the whole person, while libertarianism is a political philosophy.

Abramoff Bought Cato Columnist Doug Bandow » Outside The Beltway | OTB
Bandow’s standing as a columnist and think-tank analyst provided a seemingly independent validation of the arguments the Abramoff team were using to try to sway Congressional action.
Bandow confirms that he received $2,000 for some pieces, but says it was “usually less than that amount.” He says he wrote all the pieces himself, though with topics and information provided by Abramoff.
Bandow wrote a column earlier this year — well after the disclosure that Abramoff was under federal investigation — saying that wealthy Indian tribes had become yet another “well-funded special interest seeking political favors.” In response to BusinessWeek Online’s inquiry, Bandow said his views of Indian gambling have shifted over the years.

NoodleFood: Doug Bandow, Bought and Sold Libertarian
By Diana Hsieh @ 10:27 PM I have a few words to say on Doug Bandow's Christian libertarianism in a forthcoming post, but this breaking story about how he sold his soul for a few gold coins was just too astonishing for delay.
Bandow failed to mention the financial connection in his op-eds, and he never even told his employer, the Cato Institute.
Since Bandow was willing to ever-so-quietly accept money to write op-eds in praise of special interests in these now-revealed cases, his readers must now wonder how often his judgment was swayed by such irrelevant factors in his other writings.

Bandow's willingness to churn out opinions for Abramoff only facilitated this agility, because Abramoff was never forced into stating his own views.
EW, thank you for calling Bandow on what seems to be a rather pathetic attempt to rehabilitate his reputation by (a) trying to minimize the magnitude of his wrongdoing and (b) arguing that "everyone does it".
In Bandow's "market-oriented" scenario, if journalists in the MSM are going to abrogate their traditional roles to become paid political hacks, then I see the role of unpaid bloggers becoming much more important in the Fourth Estate.

The Democrats in Congress, with some Republican support, are moving legislation that would mandate unionization of emergency personnel, overriding the laws in at least half of the states.  One of the bizarre side-effects of the legislation would be to eliminate the right of professional firefighters to volunteer on the side.
Discouraging a highly skilled group of professionals who care about their communities, and have the talent to prevent a vast damage in any way from volunteering their expertise, because it may jeopardize their job, is simply repulsive to this taxpayer.
