Sahm was proficient on dozens of musical instruments and was a lifelong baseball fan.
Sahm began his musical career singing and playing steel guitar, mandolin and violin as "Little" Doug Sahm, making his radio debut at the age five and releasing his first record "A Real American Joe" at age eleven.
Doug Sahm died of a heart attack in his sleep in a motel room in Taos, New Mexico on November 18, 1999.

Doug was a true original and his music is unique; The Sir Douglas Quintet and Doug Sahm are long overdue for induction to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
Doug would get everyone in on the show - he would let us dance on the stage at the north soap creek - just like we could do at the bigger convention center concerts if we were lucky enough to score backstage passes to get on stage.
Doug's songs were original and he did not have to take familiar riffs or lyrics to make him the star that he is, unlike most of today's so-called stars in music.

Three articles about Doug Sahm which were originally published in Texas Monthly magazine in 1974, 1989, and 1993, have been reposted on their website.
As a joke, Sahm once told Ward that they were from Lebanon and this misstatement of fact was repeated by John Lomax III in the liner notes to 1998 CD The Crazy Cajun Recordings, as well as in The Guiness Encyclopedia of Popular Music, among other places.

Joined on this one by his long time collaborator Augie Meyers, his son Shawn and alternative country pioneers the Gourds, the songs on this album will make you appreciate what a talent we lost when this music legend left us.
If you were ever a fan of Sahm, the Sir Douglas Quintet, or the Texas Tornados, you must have this album.

Doug Sahm began his solo career in 1972, after the Sir Douglas Quintet finished its contract with Smash/Mercury and after Atlantic Records co-owner/producer Jerry Wexler convinced him to sign to his label.
This group cut a lot of material, which was whittled down to the 12-track album Doug Sahm and Band, released in early 1973.
At the time, the record received a push from the label and was generally disparaged because of those very all-stars on whose back it was sold, but the years have been kind indeed to the album, and it stands among Sahm's best.
