Doug served as an officer in the Air Force during the Korean War and used his position to do whatever he could for veterans.

Doug Watkins was an extremely solid and inventive bassist featured on many excellent jazz records of the late 1950s.
Watkins apparently started playing the cello just a few days before featuring the instrument on this album, but you can't tell by listening.
The sound is warm, exotic at times, and the presence of Yusef Lateef has a strong impact on the overall feel of the album.

Trumpeter Thad Jones receives first billing on this all-star outing, but vibraphonist Teddy Charles, who contributed three of the six selections (two of the other songs are by pianist Mal Waldron, while the lone standard is "Embraceable You") was really the musical director.
Jones, Charles and Waldron are joined by Frank Wess (doubling on tenor and flute), bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Elvin Jones for a set of modern hard bop.
Although this was not a regular group and there is not an obvious leader, the music is on a higher level than that of a routine jam session.

Byrd, Joe Gordon: trumpet; D. Watkins: bass; Hank Mobley: tenor sax; Duke Jordan, Horace Silver, Ray Santisi: piano; Art Blakey, Art Taylor, Jim Zitano: drums; Kenny Burrell: guitar.
During its short existence, Transition released two albums under the names of leaders Donald Byrd and the late Doug Watkins, all long out-of-print and big-$ collectors’ items, and Blue Note’s got them right here.
I’d love to be able to say they are long-lost classic sessions and the world is a much better place with them back in circulation, but I’d then be changing my residence to Hyperbole Manor.

Though Watkins' lead vocals in this record are kept in the pocket and become almost unnoticed on most of the songs, this album is powered by many guest performances from quartet gospel's elite and some diverse musical material, including highly-effective backing vocals from the upcoming quartets Integrity and Purpose.
He wrote most of the material on this and previous records and has given other fans a chance to listen to what the other side of quartet music sounds and looks like.
