Doug Yule - Story   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Doug Yule played with the Velvets from 1968 until the band dissolved in the early seventies.
Yule continued on with his life, the periodic royalty checks one of the few reminders of what he had been a part of.
And although Yule was able to obtain a complimentary copy of "Peel Slowly and See", an impressive box set of The Velvet Underground discography which included recordings done while Yule was in the band, he was not interviewed for the liner notes that appeared in the collection.

Douglas Alan Yule (born February 25, 1947) is an American rock and roll musician (bass guitar, organ, guitar, drums and vocals), famous for being a member of The Velvet Underground from 1968 to 1973.
Doug Yule became a friend of the band, but he was no big fan of their music.
Yule was not included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when the Velvets were inducted, and he didn't join their reunion in the early 1990s.

Doug Yule - Biography - AOL Music
Doug Yule replaced John Cale as bass player for the Velvet Underground in late 1968, and went on to play on their third and fourth albums, as well as continue with the Lou Reed-less version of the group for a while in the early 1970s.
Yule had never even played with them or auditioned; they may have just felt that his personality was suitable, having already hung out with him.
Although Yule took an unassuming, back-seat sort of role in the band when he joined, by 1970 he was becoming more assertive and exerting more of a voice in the band's direction.

Doug was to become the forgotten Velvet to some extreme, blamed often for the Velvets becoming a "vehicle for Lou Reed's softer side; a homogeneous entity devoid of the white hot intensity which was fueled by the uncompromising spirit of John Cale".
Doug Yule had left Boston University after one year, and managed to dodge the draft up for the Vietnam War.
Perhaps Doug was in over his head, but he had the confidence (although he himself described it as arrogance), to try and keep up.

Billy Yule - Free Music Downloads, Videos, Lyrics, CDs, MP3s, Bio, Merchandise and Links
Yule got the gig because he was younger brother of bassist Doug Yule (who had only been in the band since late 1968, when he replaced John Cale).
As it turned out, however, Yule only drummed on a few of the tracks of the final studio album to be recorded with Lou Reed as leader, Loaded; they were otherwise handled by session man Tommy Castanaro, producer/engineer Adrian Barber, and Doug Yule.
Yule, however, is the drummer on Live at Max's Kansas City, recorded on August 23, 1970, Reed's final night with the band.

The Velvet Underground, which at that time consisted of Doug Yule (vocals/guitar), Willie Alexander (keyboards/vocals), Walter Powers (bass guitar) and Maureen Tucker (drums), had toured the United Kingdom and The Netherlands in 1971 to support its latest album, Loaded.
Squeeze, whose title supposedly reflects Sesnick's stranglehold on Yule or the barrel-scraping efforts to squeeze maximum revenue out of the band name, was recorded in the autumn of 1972 and released in February 1973 in the United Kingdom, France and Spain.
Although the album technically is a Velvet Underground release, it is properly Doug Yule's debut studio album and it probably would have fared far better if it had been labelled as such, given the actual quality of most of the tracks, some of which would not have been out of place on Loaded.

Yule is perhaps the most maligned person in the history of the Velvet Underground.
The fact of the matter is that Doug Yule was able to fill in steadily and create his own niche; however the driving force of the first two VU albums was the creative tension between Lou Reed and John Cale.
The version of the VU that continued after Lou Reed's departure (and led by Doug Yule) is most definitely the cause of much scorn towards Yule.

Doug Yule - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Despite this, Yule went back into the studio in 1973 (this time with Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice and two unknown session musicians) and recorded what would be the final album released under the Velvets banner.
It is argued that Yule's lead vocals were a definite strength for the band, and became more prominent in the bands' recordings once Reed's voice became strained from touring.
Adding to controversy, Yule was not included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when the Velvets were inducted, and he didn't join their reunion in the early 1990s, despite Sterling Morrison's wish that he be included.

Doug: I don't know anything about that legend, I don't where it came from - unless it was started to make the group more interesting somehow.
Doug: Yes, as soon as I joined the group he encouraged me. He didn't like to be that under the spotlight for that long.

Live In Seattle is a real find for fans of The Velvet Underground, what with its onstage recordings from Doug Yule, the former instrumentalist who showed up on Lou Reed 's brilliant 1975 tour prior to the release of Coney Island Baby.
The recording quality is surprisingly good, and two renditions of Yule's new "Beginning To Get It" are certainly the son of "Beginning To See The Light," or an existentialist extension of the philosophy espoused by Lou Reed on that nugget from the third Velvets LP.
Tucker headlined the November 4, 2000 event in Seattle where most of this was recorded, and Jennifer Yule's liner notes reveal that this performance happened near the end of Tucker's closing set.
