Douglas Carswell MP (John) Douglas (Wilson) Carswell (born 3 April 1971) is a British politician.
Carswell is the son of two doctors and spent much of his early childhood in Africa where his parents worked.
Carswell was elected to Parliament at the 2005 General Election for the constituency of Harwich defeating the sitting Labour MP Ivan Henderson by 920 votes.

In a 90-minute Debate led by Douglas Carswell, based on Edward Leigh’s pamphlet “Set the Schools Free” [published May 8 on the Cornerstone website www.cornerstonegroup.org.uk], Douglas Carswell and Edward Leigh gave the proposals set forth in the pamphlet a parliamentary airing.
From the outset, Mr Carswell stressed that he had not called the debate in order “to score party political points”, but “to find some consensus.” He began by acknowledging that “not all schools with independence are good”.

“Mr Carswell may be entitled to promote his right wing agenda on these sensitive issues but it is important that he is not allowed to mislead the public while doing so.

It seems an ole’ mucker of mine, now an MP, Douglas Carswell MP is touting a rather libertarian idea.
Or rather (and this is the bright idea of Douglas Carswell MP), abolish VAT and replace it with a local sales tax (LST) - far easier and cheaper to administer than a tax on “added value".
Local sales tax is no quick fix and the scale of resource equalisation needed to make it work would be so massive that it would take more power over local government at the centre and make local councils even less accountable to their electorates and even more in thrall to the centre.
