A world-renowned scientist, Douglas Futuyma is professor of evolutionary biology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Futuyma is also the author of Science on Trial: The Case for Evolution (1995, Sinauer Assoc.), an introduction to the creation–evolution controversy from the perspective of a scientist.

Futuyma is not debating evolution on its own; he is rather showing the reader that it is a much more scientific explanation than the theory of Biblical creation.
Futuyma believes himself to be the epitome of a scientist, but he is just as biased as any of his fundamentalist targets.
Futuyma is not merely claiming that the hierarchical classification of organisms is consistent with the theory of evolution; instead he is claiming that the hierarchy itself is evidence for evolution.

Furthermore, Futuyma’s anti-Christian rage would completely ignore the huge body of intelligent and dedicated researchers in all fields (including biology and microbiology), from a variety of Judeo-Christian faiths and denominations, who are deeply-committed Creationists, based not just on religious or Christian convictions, but based on their analysis of the evidence.
Futuyma seems to subscribe to the philosophy, "Beginning with the impersonal, everything, including man, must be explained in terms of the impersonal plus time plus chance." {as Francis Schaeffer states in his book ‘He Is There And He Is Not Silent’ – MSS}.
Futuyma cannot point to a specific historical event where he could conclusively point the branching event where the modern human became a new species from its different ancestor.

In my opinion, the 3rd edition is simply the best textbook for a college evolution course there is. It is organized in a logical manner, emphasizing conceptual issues and not marching up the geological timescale or across the phyla, or getting bogged down in lengthy case studies.
I think that Futuyma is extremely careful and tries to be neutral, which makes this book a reference book on the topic, as it is rather safe.
Textbooks are unfortunately often written by professionals who seem more interested in impressing their colleagues with the elegance of their explanations than in presenting their material in an easy-to-understand way for students.

Futuyma and Mark Ridley are bioiglists so they tend to deemphasise fossil evidence, and focus on that from their fields, which is what most biologists do in my experience.
Futuyma appeals mainly to homology and hierarchical organization as proofs of evolution.
Futuyma also resorts to the good old “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny” line, and here I was thinking that one had been put to rest with the exposure of Haeckel’s fraud.

Specifically, I reported that several of the arguments made by the prestigious Douglas Futuyma in his book, Science on Trial, were invalid.
Douglas Futuyma said that organisms can be arranged in a nested hierarchy; we can divide them into kingdoms, phyla, species, etc., where two closely related species fall in the same phylum, two related phyla are in the same kingdom, and so on.

 Science on Trial (Douglas Futuyma).
Douglas Futuyma is the author of a widely used college textbook on evolution: 'Evolutionary Biology' and has been editor of 'Evolution', the leading international journal of evolutionary research.
According to Futuyma, 'Evolution has the status of fact' and 'the attack on evolution is an attack on science in general'.
Indeed: a complete point by point refutation of all of Denton's arguments would be the most convincing arguments for evolution for a creationist.

In the introductory chapter of the textbook, Futuyma explains the importance of Darwin's theory straightforwardly as a contribution to the program of metaphysical naturalism.
The leading examples of this are Marxism and Freudianism, which were accepted by most intellectuals as scientific because, 3 as Douglas Futuyma tells us, they served the cause of naturalism and materialism.
On the contrary, Richard Dawkins, Douglas Futuyma, George Gaylord Simpson, and David Hull himself are absolutely typical in that they address the subject of God explicitly and repeatedly, for the purpose of justifying their assumption that a Creator does not exist.

If this is so, then this is concrete evidence that living things are created, as evolutionary biologist Douglas Futuyma has acknowledged.
Recall that he wrote: "If they did appear in a fully developed state, they must indeed have been created by some omnipotent intelligence."171 Evolutionists, on the other hand, try to interpret the sequence by which living things appeared on earth as evidence for evolution.
Fossils reveal that living things appeared on earth first in the sea, and then on land, followed by the appearance of man, who possesses a flawless and superior design.

Futuyma "out-Mayr's" Mayr in his doubts that sympatric speciation is a viable process.
Host-specific herbivorous insects have often been used as an exemplar of species which are prone to sympatric speciation, but Futuyma finds little evidence that such processes are common.
Contrary to a great deal of current literature that would suggest that allopatric and sympatric speciations are equally likely, Futuyma suggests that we should not jump to that conclusion.

 What is Evolution?
Biological evolution may be slight or substantial; it embraces everything from slight changes in the proportion of different alleles within a population (such as those determining blood types) to the successive alterations that led from the earliest protoorganism to snails, bees, giraffes, and dandelions."
- Douglas J. Futuyma in Evolutionary Biology, Sinauer Associates 1986
It is important to note that biological evolution refers to populations and not to individuals and that the changes must be passed on to the next generation.
