Douglas Harkness School was named after Douglas Scott Harkness who was born in Toronto on March 29, 1903 and moved to Calgary in 1929.

Harkness received one of the the highest military honours, the George Medal for "courage, gallantry and devotion to duty of a higher order" while officer commanding troops during the Sicilian campaign.
Harkness was elected to the House of Commons representing Calgary East.

The Douglas Harkness Community School in Calgary is named in his honour.

Because the collection was from the estate of Douglas Harkness, who a few years before he died compiled a book about his own china collection, The Psychometry of Tucker China: Philadelphia 1823-1838 (1997).
Douglas Harkness thought that many English china designs came from original Tucker molds that had been auctioned off when the company dissolved.
The title of the Harkness book led Cottone (and undoubtedly others) to believe his collection was primarily Tucker china, and that's why Cottone agreed to do the sale.
