Douglas Henderson, who has died aged 71, was the Scottish National party's chief whip at Westminster during the most influential period in their history, the late 1970s.
Henderson was far to the right on the nationalist spectrum and saw Labour's difficulties thereafter as an opportunity to play a decisive part in bringing them down.
Henderson was often a controversial figure within the SNP, and not one who was put on show when the party was trying to display its more moderate face.
