Volunteer patrols stir uneasiness on border
Leedy, a Sierra Vista retiree, is among an unlikely bunch of self-appointed border police set to descend on Cochise County to "assist" the U.S. Border Patrol in keeping undocumented immigrants from crossing the U.S.-Mexican border.
The fears were stoked this week after the White-power organization National Alliance distributed fliers in the border town of Douglas, an hour southeast of Tombstone, and went on TV saying they had infiltrated the project.
Larry Vance, a rancher who lives north of the border near Douglas, said the Minuteman Project already is having an effect with news about volunteers and an increased number of Border Patrol agents driving down the number of undocumented immigrants coming through his 20-acre property.

 20th Anniversary of In C
At times you fell you have never done anything all your life long but listen to this music and as if that is all there is or ever will be, but it is altogether absorbing, exciting, and moving."
Douglas Leedy wrote, "There aren't very many really revolutionary pieces of music in this century or any other: pieces that seem like cultural mutations that spring spontaneously into being without visible or audible precedent, Le Sacre du Printemps is an authentic example.
Over a constant pulse, each musician advances independently through the score, creating a "loose-jointed canon" (Douglas Leedy).

Just one composer of the stature of Cage or Ussachevsky would be a coup for any world-class conservatory, to say nothing of a music department of a liberal arts college that on average graduates no more than two to six music majors a year.
And yet from this relatively small pool have also risen composers of the caliber of Susan Blaustein '75, Gene Carl '75, David Chaitkin '59, Morris Haigh '53, Daniel Kingman '49, Douglas Leedy '59, David Noon '68 and John Rahn '66.
Kohn was a catalyst behind the College's most definitive statement to date about its composition legacy when, in 1988, Pomona commissioned pieces in honor of its centennial from this impressive list of alumni, as well as from Cage and Ussachevsky.

The piece is influenced by Eric Satie's Musique d’ameublement (one reason it is titled in French): I like to think of it as a kind of aural screen through which other things may be heard.
The musical material is partly original, partly quoted, for by that time I had studied both Roman Haubenstock-Ramati's Credentials and, more closely, Douglas Leedy's Octet: Quaderno Rossiniano.
Quoted material included the opening measure of the Tristan prelude and a song by Hugo Wolf (as I recall).

This is a fascinating piece to see performed, as each player is given a very small gamut of sounds to play, and the gestures they require become familiar, weaving a tapestry of motion parallel to that of sound.
My friend Douglas Leedy wonders if Cage knew the Benjamin Franklin string quartet, a curious predecessor in terms of its hocketing technique -- in which each player contributes isolated pitches to an ongoing single-line melody, as individual piano keys do to the conventional piano melody.
It would be good to hear the two quartets on a single program, perhaps with Ruth Crawford Seeger’s quartet separating them.
