Douglas Marland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Douglas Marland (born Marland Messner, May 5, 1935 - March 6, 1993) was a writer of American soap operas, most known for his tenure as head writer for As the World Turns, which he held from 1985 until his death in 1993.
Marland diversified ATWT's previously white-bread canvas, introducing an Amerasian character as the child of a Vietnam vet, and also featuring a story of a mixed-race couple marrying and having a baby (and showing negative reactions to the marriage and birth).
Marland wrote the show until his sudden death from a botched abdominal surgery procedure in 1993.

When ratings hit rock bottom in 1977 and ABC was considering canceling the program, a last ditch effort at resuscitation brought in writer Douglas Marland, who had created a number of highly successful, youthful storylines on The Doctors, and Gloria Monty,; who had directed Secret Storm, as the new producer.
Marland created a new storyline centered on 15-year-old Laura Vining (Genie Francis), a previously peripheral character, and her relationship with Scotty Baldwin (Kin Shriner).
When Laura killed a taunting older lover in a rage and allowed her self-sacrificing mother to take the blame, the show's ratings really took off, bringing in a younger audience who became particularly hooked on the unfolding tragedy of the mother and daughter.

Classic TV & Movie Hits - Loving/The City
It was co-created by Agnes Nixon and Douglas Marland, two noted figures in daytime television in the US.
But Marland and Nixon left the series after a few years and in spite of ABC bumping down Ryan's Hope to give Loving a choice timeslot, and cast additions of such popular All My Children stars as Debbi Morgan (Angie) and Jean Leclerc (Jeremy), the ratings remained poor throughout the show's run.
Loving, dubbed "the little show that could" by viewers, suffered from a constant revolving door of writers and producers, leading to questionable story moments such as a heroine's addiction to cough syrup and one character selling his soul to the Devil.

Among them, “write for the characters the audience wants to see.” He doesn’t care about the revolving door of new head writers, executive producers and network presidents who may disagree, who may even question why a particular beloved character is still around.

Much of the improvement came with the addition of Douglas Marland, who used the show’s long history and rich characters to create new and involving storylines that brought in new viewers while satisfying veteran “World” fans.
(Marland also brought the show the first-ever gay male character in daytime drama, but introduced controversial storylines without moralistic preaching or obvious “relevance”–no “very special episodes”here.)
But in 1993, Marland died of an aneurysm; his expanded plots and cast were cut by a new writing team–the result was another decline in both critical acclaim and audience numbers.
