Lost data can translate into lost dollars, and while security managers can’t help making mistakes, the important thing is to learn from those mistakes and help improve security.
In an advice column on ComputerWorld.com, Internet Security Expert Douglas Schweitzer, with help from security consultant Ken M. Shaurette of MPC Solutions, says companies make at least a dozen common mistakes when it comes to network security.
Also among Schweitzer and Shaurette’s 12 mistakes are: misconfiguring system security (firewall, antivirus and intrusion-detection/prevention systems); allowing users to choose difficult-to-guess passwords, assuming that personnel can't become familiar with good practices and regularly change passwords; believing that applying the minimum security requirements to comply with security regulations is enough, and trusting human nature.
