  The Douglas F4D Skyray
Although the Skyray was leading-edge in 1953, aircraft design was moving very rapidly at the time, and within a few years it would be outclassed in terms of raw performance.
Skyrays could also be fitted with a spool for towing a target sleeve or dart-style tow target.
Skyrays that were used as test machines, as well as a few that were used as target tugs late in their service lives, had gaudy paint schemes, such as dayglow orange tailfin, wingtips, and other elements.

F4D Skyray - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although it was in service for a very short time and never entered combat, it was notable for being the first carrier-launched plane to hold the world's absolute speed record and was the first Navy fighter capable of exceeding Mach 1 in level flight.
The J40 proved troublesome and was eventually cancelled, and the Skyray was fitted instead with the Pratt and Whitney J57, a more powerful but larger engine.
The Skyray was designed exclusively for the high-altitude interception role and was unsuited to the multi-mission capabilities soon in demand, so it had a short life in Navy and Marine Corps service, the last planes being withdrawn from service in 1964.

 Douglas F-6 Skyray
The modifications needed to adapt the Skyray to the Pratt and Whitney J57 turbojet were considerable, and approximately 80 percent of the airframe had to be redesigned.
Its Skyray interceptors participated in the aerial defense of the United States, and carried an electronics package on the fuselage centerline pylon, a pair of 300-gallon underwing drop tanks, two packs of 12 2.75-inch unguided rockets, and two Sidewinder air-to-missiles on the outer underwing pylons.
The service life of the Skyray with the Navy and USMC was relatively brief, since the aircraft was specialized to the high-altitude interception role and lacked the multi-mission capability that was becoming increasingly important.

The Skyray also has the distinction of being the only Navy interceptor ever to be assigned to the North American Air Defense command, serving with VFAW-3, an all- weather interceptor unit based at NAS North Island, San Diego.
The Douglas F4D Skyray was the result of a 1947 Navy design competition for a new aircraft based on delta wing planforms.
Very early on, the pure delta planform was abandoned in favor of a tailless aircraft with a pair of mid-mounted, thin, low aspect-ratio, highly-sweptback wings with round tips.

Approval of the Douglas design was signified by the award of a contract for two Douglas XF4D-1 prototypes on 16 December 1948, the first making its maiden flight on 23 January 1951 powered by a 2268kg thrust Allison J35-A-17 engine.
The F4D Skyray was a cantilever mid-wing monoplane, the wing of modified delta configuration incorporating elevons to serve collectively as elevators or differentially as ailerons.
At the peak of its utilisation, the Skyray equipped 11 US Navy, six US Marine and three reserve squadrons, but none was used operationally.

As it was actually very different with the F4D-1 Skyray, although it was outwardly similar, a new designation F5D-1 Skylancer was given.
It was because Douglas had many military airplane orders from the Navy at that time.

By 1951 two prototypes were airborne, the second of these setting 2 new world absolute speed records in access of 1,200 Km/h.
Endowed with blistering speed and an incredible rate of climb, the nimble Skyray was the only NAVAL element of NORAD's defence of the continental United States during the late 1950's.

The Skyray is another one of those aircraft that were designed, developed, tested and forced into operations during the turbulent early 1950's when it seemed possible to build any type of combat aircraft from the weird to the wonderful.
At the same time, these aircraft often would have some very unforgiving or dangerous flying characteristics, which never were fully overcome.
The Skyray fell into this category too, as many of its design parameters fell into the range of the unknown.
