  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: McDonnell
The advent of World War II was a major boost to the new company, from fifteen employees in 1938 the firm ended the war with over 5,000, a significant producer of aircraft parts.
The merger was essentially a takeover by McDonnell of the financially troubled Douglas, with James McDonnell as chairman.
McDonnell Douglas agreed to the merger, and the aerospace industry was reduced to three major participants: Boeing, Lockheed, and Europe's Airbus.

 NACA - D-558-1 Skystreak - 1/32 Scale Mahogany Model
The Skystreaks were turbojet powered aircraft that took off from the ground under their own power and had straight wings and tails.
All the Skystreaks were initially painted scarlet, which lead to the nickname "crimson test tube." NACA later had the color of the Skystreaks changed to white to improve optical tracking and photography.
The Skystreaks carried 634 pounds of instrumentation and were ideal first-generation, simple, transonic research airplanes.

Fort Scott, KS According to the flight records, Skystreak #2 (the one that crashed) was used for flight familarization for both Carl and Turner in preparation for their record breaking flight.
Skystreak #3, the North Carolina airplane, was originally not instrumented and was intended to be used by NACA for flight familarization and exhibitions.
After Douglas finished their own, and the Navy's research programs in ship #1, it was turned over to NACA and they did, indeed use it for spare parts.

Despite all attempts the Skystreak was only able to break the sound barrier once and that was in September 1948 when the aircraft was in a long dive.
After the X-1 and Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier a short while later in November of 1947, the Skystreak was out of the spotlight and the three aircraft built spent the rest of their career in 'normal' testing until being withdrawn from use in mid-1953.
Skystreak #1 is at the Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum, #2 was lost during tests, and #3 is now being restored after languishing for years outdoors at the Marine Corps Aviation Museum at Quantico.

 Douglas D-558-1 Skystreak - 1455
A single-place, straight-wing, jet-powered aircraft, the D-558 I "Skystreak" was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft.
Much of the research in the public mind performed by the D-558-1 Skystreaks, was quickly overshadowed by Chuck Yeager and the X-1 rocket plane.
The Skystreak performed an important role in aeronautical research by flying for extended periods of time at transonic speeds, which freed the X-1 to fly for limited periods at supersonic speeds.

 Douglas Skystreak - Definition, explanation
The Douglas Skystreak (the D-558-1) was designed in 1945 by the Douglas Aircraft Company for the U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics, in conjunction with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA).
The number 2 Skystreak made a total of 19 flights with the NACA before it crashed on takeoff due to compressor disintegration on May 3, 1948, killing NACA pilot Howard C. Lilly.
From the first flight in 1949 through 1953 the third Skystreak was flown in an intensive flight-research program by seven NACA test pilots, with a great deal of usefully data collect on high-subsonic handling.

 D-558-1
The division of responsibility among the partners was that Douglas flew a contractor program on the first Skystreak to investigate its performance, handled major maintenance and performed any modifications.
The (Roman numeral) I in the aircraft’s designation referred to the fact that the Skystreak was the phase-one version of what had originally been conceived as a three-phase program, with the phase-two aircraft having swept wings.
The Navy contracted with Douglas to design the airplane, and in the course of the design process, the D-558 came to be divided into two separate phases, with phase one being a straight-wing turbojet aircraft and phase two consisting of a swept-wing design with turbojet and rocket propulsion.

At the end of this book Lloyd Jones presents a review of each of the six Skystreak kits issued to date:  Meikraft, Douglas, Mike Herril, Collect-Aire, Allyn and HBM Models.  He notes that 12-Squared is planning to reissue the Meikraft kit, with all the needed corrections incorporated, sometime in 2002.
