An examination of the total number of vigilante movements per state reveals that Kansas, with 19 vigilante movements, ranks fourth overall, and third among Western states behind Texas, with 52 movements, and California with 43 movements.[16] The incidents in Texas, California, and Idaho, along with southern lynching in general have received extensive scholarly attention.
These figures indicate that Kansas is indeed an appropriate setting for an examination of vigilantism, and the Butler County “798 Vigilantes,” is an important group.
