Douloi in Athenian democracy were protected by laws similar to today liberal rights.
Douloi had the right to become suppliants in temples in case they were maltreated by their masters, and in that case their master was forced to sell them.

One of the most honored portions of the code of the Douloi decrees that decisions must be made with an eye towards the good of the whole and with a specific disregard for how the decision will affect one's own family.
Douloi politics are as vicious as they are subtle, however, so most Polloi would not necessarily consider elevation to the Douloi a goal worth striving for.
Douloi and Polloi maintain a working relationship roughly analogous to that between management and labor in contemporary America; the Douloi hold many of the cards, but the Polloi outnumber them many times over, and are not without power.

 Colossians 1: 25
They are all "bond slaves" (douloi) as far as their status goes and "servants" (diakonoi) as far as their job function goes.
We are douloi -- slaves, purchased with a price and because he bought us he is our master; we are diakonoi -- servants because he has commissioned us to serve.
Oh, certainly it is right if indeed we are douloi, bondslaves who were purchased by our Lord in his atonement, by which he became our master for as long as life shall last and for eternity.

By this name they are thus institutionally distinguished from the anonymous douloi (slaves).
They were not free and had no political rights; they were thus comparable in this way to chattel slaves of which the rest of Greece had many.
In effect the Helots were tied to the land in almost the same way as medieval serfs.

 Asymmetry: Reading: Exordium
First are the Douloi, also known as the Ranks of Service--the ruling classes, with their elaborate social rituals and endless infighting.
Next are the Polloi, the common folk, who can fight their way to high position through the military or other service, but who for the most part go about their lives untroubled by politics.
The social rituals of the Douloi are interesting if only because our own are recognizable in them; the authors have formalized and extended the patterns of speech and body language that most of us use unconsciously, and made of it the second language that it truly is. Alien races appear sparingly and are truly alien.

She argues that the slave system influenced American classical scholarship to see ancient douleia through the lens of American slavery, and she focuses on B.L. Gildersleeve, who fought in the Confederate cavalry, as an agent of this influence.
Aristotle's comparison here, however, is not to douloi but to diakonoi, which du Bois renders by "slave" (215) with no mention that there is no doulos here -- a difference prudently observed by both Ross and Ostwald in their translations ("hasty servants").
Again, she goes on to cite a longish passage from the Rhetoric as 1380a5-6 (actually1380a14-23 in Bekker lines), where Aristotle is engaged in his thematic treatment of anger as one of the emotions with which the rhetor must deal.

Douloi is a Greek word for servants or slaves.
In his epistle to the Philippians, the apostle Paul used the word douloi to describe Timothy and himself:
In Jesus' days, menial tasks were despised and they were carried out by slaves. These tasks include loosing the thongs of a person's sandals (John 1:27) and foot-washing.

Athenian democracy - Article from FactBug.org - the fast Wikipedia mirror site
Women, children, douloi, andrapods, foreigners, resident aliens—groups that together made up a majority of the city's population—had no voting rights at all.
On the other hand, modern democracy has its own limitations in comparison to the ancient model, as the right of voting is usually limited to once every several years, and voters merely get to choose their representatives in the legislative or executive branches (with the exception of occasional referendums).
It is often written that the Athenian democracy came into existence thanks to the use of andrapods that allowed citizens the free time to participate in politics (including courts of justice, while the administration was left mostly to douloi) without worrying about life's necessities.

(’adbhedhe shelomoh; douloi Salomon): "The children of Solomon’s servants" constituted a company or guild of the Jewish exiles who returned with Zerubbabel from Babylonia to Jerusalem in 537 BC, pursuant to the decree of Cyrus; they are mentioned 5 times (Ezr 2:55,58 parallel Ne 7:57,60; Ne 11:3).
As the prime purpose of the returning exiles was the rebuilding of the Temple and the restoration of Yahweh’s worship (Ezr 1:2,3), it was important that those who held the privileges of sanctuary service as a family heritage should go back to their duties.
