A letter by R. Shalom Dovber from 1899 or 1900, appealing for funds for the yeshivah, provides information about the reasons why it was founded.
According to memoirs of younger contemporaries, such as R. Nahum Shemariah Sassonkin, this was a problem in the great mitnagdic yeshivot such as Telz and Volozhyn, despite the efforts of the yeshivah leadership to combat this trend.
These students, says R. Shalom Dovber, will progress in their study and [spiritual] "service" and will be of benefit to society.

Wellsprings Articles - Contemplative Prayer in 20th Century Chabad
According to Rabbi Yosef Yitzhak, the effect of this discourse primarily concerning social unity, and of another talk on the topic of prayer by R. Shalom Dovber was that many members of the community began trying to engage in contemplative prayer, and addressed questions to the Rebbe as to how to do this.
It was soon followed by several other tracts from the pen of R. Shalom Dovber, including Kuntres u'Maayan Mibeit Hashem offering guidance specifically for students in the yeshiva, and then, in 1910, there appeared Kuntres HaAvodah, a full and profound manual for the contemplative.
These discourses would be studied in handwritten mimeographed texts and learnt by heart, and no doubt played a substantial role in the development of the contemplative skills of the Chabad chasidim.
