 A History
Cleveland was elected Sheriff of Lenawee County, in 1936, the year the stated was admitted to the Union, and again in 1838.
It was at this time he was appointed a commissioner by the State of Michigan to superintend the draining of marshes and other low lands in Lenawee county.
The commissioners shall also cause a copy of the report confirmed by the county court, to be laid before the board of supervisors in the county of Lenawee, at their annual session, on the second Monday in October following.

 JOHN JOHNSON, merchant of Vassar, was born in Surrey, England
Coming to Tuscola County, Michigan, he purchased a farm in the township of Vassar, which he cleared up and on which he resided till the fall of 1882, when he moved into the village of Vassar where he expects to pass the remainder of his days.
His present farm of 100 acres is in the township of Vassar, one mile north of the flourishing village of Vassar.
He was one of the early postmasters of Vassar; a member of the Republican National Convention in 1872 and again in 1880; a lay minister of the general conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Baltimore, and in 1880 at Cincinnati.

Stedman was married February 28, 1866, in Washington township, Gratiot county, to Miss Lucy Ann Bovee, born December 3, 1842, in Dover township, daughter of Jacob and Esther (Marlatt) Bovee, natives of Holland.
They died in Dover township, Lenawee county, she in her forty-eighth year, while he was seventy-nine at the time of his decease.
He was married June 25, 1901, to Maud Lindsey, born in Shiawassee county, Michigan, November 13, 1881, and of this union one child has been born, Wilma I. William H. Stedman has held the office of highway commissioner of North Star for two years, being an ardent Republican.

In the first state legislature of 1835-6, she was entitled to four representative out of forty-nine, and has now only three out of a hundred ; and in the state senate, out of a body of thirty-two, she has only one member.
Medina, and also proposed a township to be called Channing, but which never became organized, as almost the whole of it was included in the 'i strip set off to Ohio by congress, and what was left of it was afterward made part of the township of Ogden.
In 1837 provision was made for the organization of the townships of Ogden and Medina, and in 1833 the name of the township of Logan was changed to Adrian, and that of Lenawee to Madison.

The letters concern the attitude of the citizens of Alexandria towards the Michigan troops, the assassination of Colonel Ellsworth, the Zouaves, social and camp life, marches and skirmishes, political news of the day and the towns in which he was encamped.
The papers of the Michigan governor include one letter (Apr. 1863) from Colonel Robert Horatio George Minty to Governor Blair in which he recommends that Sergeant Charles F. Kendall be commissioned a lieutenant in the 4th Michigan Cavalry.
Bowers was a resident of Sullivan County, N. Y., who later came to Grand Traverse County, Michigan (1883) where he ran a mill and later became a mail carrier.
