 DOVER WESTERN HEIGHTS DEFENCES
Western Heights is the area of high ground to the west of Dover, overlooking the town and Dover Castle and the first earthwork defences were started in 1779.
The most important structures were The Citadel, North Centre Bastion and Drop Redoubt, connected by a series of deep dry ditches, four miles in all, which were built in the period 1800 to 1810 as part of the defences against French invasion of the south coast.
The Western Heights Preservation Society is dedicated to restoring as much of the structure as possible and to helping prevent any further destruction.

Its had two main functions: firstly, to accommodate a field army capable of fighting an invasion force and, secondly, to provide a stronghold which the French would have to assault if they were to capture the port and use it as a bridgehead to bring in more troops and supplies.
Change and addition to the Western Heights continued until the military handed the fortifications over to the civil authorities in 1956.
The Western Heights can be viewed from several public footpaths around its perimeter, although most of the fortress is not accessible because of its overgrown and dangerous condition.

Most people know Dover Castle on the Eastern Heights overlooking the Docks but fewer people are aware of the fortifications on the Western Heights across on the other side of the valley.
With Britain at war again with France in 1793 it was agreed that major fortifications should be built on the Western Heights including two forts connected by a deep defensive ditch and a bastion covering the ground between the forts.
Marked footpaths run across the heights and a number of short or longer options are available for viewing the area.

At one time another lighthouse was situated on the Western Heights across the other side of the town overlooking the liner terminal - this from a fragment of tile stamped CLBR (Classis Britannica).
The presence of two lighthouses, one on either side of the port and town indicates that they were intended to show the way to the harbour.
This was made of clay and rubble and covered the remains of the house, preserving it and its trompe l'oeil architectural wall paintings.

Also, Dover Castle probably gets priority treatment as far as Dover is concerned because it is incredibly popular (justifiably so) and it is a massive source of revenue for EH which must contribute to the maintenance and development of the Castle and provide finances for other properties.
To put it in a nutshell, if people came to Dover to visit Western Heights (and the Castle because the two are inexorably linked), and as a consequence of this money is spent in the town and the two carparks at the Heights are overflowing then 'they' will have to do something about it.
The above pictures were taken by the Dover Express in August 1971 and show members of a voluntary organisation working for the British Trust and Conservation Corps, hard at work clearing scrub from the ditches in the hope that their efforts will contribute to getting Ancient Monument status for the Heights fortifications.

It was used for club nights, parties, and rallies and on more than one occasion as accommodation for riders passing through the port of Dover.
Eventually the local council forced the rent up to such a level that it was no longer a viable proposition and the clubhouse had to go.
This was 1972 and the club moved its headquarters to the Old Endeavour Pub in London Road, Dover and is still there.
