Doves - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The band are known for its large, epic sound, and have been compared with contemporaries such as Radiohead as well as classic Manchester bands such as The Stone Roses, New Order and The Smiths.
The band regrouped, changed their name to Doves and released three EPs in 1998 and 1999, which established the group's new sound and met with a warm critical response.
Doves' second album The Last Broadcast was released two years later, reached #1 in the UK album chart and was also nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.

Doves / The Music Live Review
Unfortunately, the band plump for an instrumental track to close which is far weaker than the rest of the set, but still the memories of the crazy old-skool dance routines, the implausibly baggy jeans and the fat, riveting sound of The Music are enough to leave the audience wanting a whole lot more.
Doves are back with a blistering new single ("There Goes The Fear") and a second album ("The Last Broadcast") which, promising to be even better than the earth-shattering "Lost Souls", has got fans and critics alike wetting their g-strings in anticipation.
Doves are going to get bigger (chart-wise) with the advent of the new album and these guys know that their 'early' tour shirt will win them cred in the years to come.

Nationwide studies suggest that a significant number of doves and pigeons are currently infected with varying strains of the disease.
Doves and pigeons are the two species most documented with the infection because of their gregarious habits, and their feeding of young with crop milk, noted Gonzales.
Most often, however, dead doves and pigeons are found because they tend to die in the open, whereas other bird species seek cover just prior to their death.

 Doves: Some Cities (2005): Reviews
As has always been the case with Doves, aural environment-building sometimes seems to be all the band has going for it, like on "Someday Soon," which uses sudden dramatic hushes and angelic choirs to pump life into a ballad that's practically melody-free.
Doves’ strength lies in their careful sculpting of the sonic and the emotional, and here they’ve restrained their palette and scope so much that the result is grey.
Coldplay will pass, Travis already passed, but Doves have an intensity, and athmosphere of their own that can't be missed and will be remembered at least for the next 25 years.

As I waited in the Double Door for the sold-out Doves show, I could not help but to notice the crowd-I was surrounded by not only the usual twenty-something concertgoers, but this intriguing band had drawn people far older than I could have expected.
Graciously, the Doves did not torture their admirers too long and soon appeared to the greeting of thunderous applause.
One could not help but be convinced that the Doves are here to stay after such a profound show of the breadth of their talent and imagination.

BBC - Rock & Alt Review - Doves, Some Cities
Doves are back with a remarkably affecting record that gives the listener a real insight into the mindset of band members Jez, Andy and Jimi.
As a massive Doves fan, I was initially a little disappointed at the first listen, as it seemed shallow and lightweight, but it takes several listens to hear the true depth of the vistas contained within, what with the many intricacies and melodies.
New bands like the Bravery and Bloc Party are really good but this shows what a band can do when they have a few albums under their belt.

Doves' evolution continues to be a very gradual one, each subsequent album containing subtle shifts in style, but never too far away from their distinctive sound.
The fact is, Doves are at their best when Goodwin is singing, exemplified by the atmospheric "One of These Days" and the downright jubilant "Sky Starts Falling", yet another one of those stadium rockers they do so well, which highlight the album's second half.
Some Cities is not as strong as its two predecessors, but it does continue the band's run of consistently pleasing albums, cementing their status as one of the most reliable rock bands in the UK today.

The night was highlighted by a euphoric rendition of "A House." The song, among the best examples of Doves' lyrical themes of love and life lost, began in an acoustic hush and crescendoed into an emotional wave of sound that crossed the cerebral arena rock of Radiohead with the textured psychedelia of Spiritualized.

If the first two Doves albums, Lost Souls and The Last Broadcast, were records that sounded like they were conceived in Glastonbury-like vast open plains, each number a snapshot of the wide open countryside or of the rolling sea, then their third album, Some Cities, paints altogether different pictures.
Snowballing a couple of times round the world, the Doves live sound, augmented by Martin Rebelski on keyboards, further pushed the envelope, creating a sound so massive it left you wondering how it managed to contain itself within the constraints of the venues where they rolled up and plugged in.
With the release of the band’s second long player in April 2002, The Last Broadcast, Doves went from worst-kept secret to the upper reaches of the charts.

Ten years ago, when doves first formed in the wake of the acid house craze that swept through their hometown of Manchester, England, they were just three kids who wanted to have a good time.
