  SPLICEDwire: "Down Periscope" review
Only the chase scenes in which the misfit crew try to out-smart the modern navy really make "Down Periscope" worth while, and the silent running gaffes are where most of the laughs come in.
Whenever "Down Periscope" is not engaged in cat-and-mouse the story drags, droning on with a sub-plot about Grammer playing father figure to the one female sailor (Lauren Holly), on board as part of an experimental program.
As a submarine comedy, there will be inevitable comparisons to "Operation Petticoat," and by that standard "Down Periscope" doesn't measure up, but as a cheap television distraction from chores on a Sunday afternoon, it would do nicely.

One peers down into the focusing viewfinder while holding the lever down, and focusing with the other hand - it's not as much of a juggle as it sounds.
There appears to be a ground-glass element involved somewhere in the periscope assembly, as the image you see has the same slightly grainy quality as that seen through an SLR or TLR focusing screen.
Additionally, the periscope's action was made somewhat more automatic, by having it automatically lower into place when cocking the shutter, and automatically retract as the shutter was fired.

Review: Down Periscope   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
What we're left with is the tired, overused storyline of a bunch of mismatched underdogs coming together as a team in time to overcome their adversaries.
Undoubtedly, the most entertaining part of Down Periscope comes during the end credits, when various cast members "let down their hair" to join the Village People in a lively, campy rock video for their '70s hit, "In the Navy." There's a lot more energy in this four-minute segment than in the hour-and-a-half that precedes it.
Unfortunately, Down Periscope is more interested in regurgitating formulas that we've seen literally dozens of times before.

Well then, swabbie, "Down Periscope" is the answer to your prayers.
Though "Down Periscope" is set in the age of the nuclear submarine, the jokes seem to date back to the time of the original battle of the ironclads.
The level of sophistication here is perhaps best exemplified by the scene in which the Stingray's position during a silent run is given away by the cook with his not-so-silent (but certainly deadly) reaction to a can of beans.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: Down Periscope | Deseret Morning News Web edition
Though the ads make "Down Periscope" look like an off-the-wall "Naked Gun" or "Hot Shots!"-style farce, it instead proves to be a character comedy.
There are no big comic set-pieces, per se, but the cast is good, their dimwitted reactions to the goings-on are often amusing and there is even some suspense as the war games wind down.
"Down Periscope" is rated PG-13 for some vulgarity (including a running gag about Dodge having a tattoo on his private parts), profanity and comic violence.

own Periscope,'' a desperately wacky comedy in which Kelsey Grammer makes his major motion picture debut, suggests the cinematic equivalent of the obsolete submarine on which most of the movie's action takes place.
If ``Down Periscope,'' directed by David S. Ward, has the ingredients for a lively spoof of everything from ``Mutiny on the Bounty'' to ``Crimson Tide,'' they are slapped together so crudely that nothing gels, including any sense of a coherent ensemble.
The energy level of ``Down Periscope'' is so low that moments like these, which should flare hilariously, reach a wan flicker.
