  Rainbow
Rainbow is one of the few instances where someone from a legendary band successfully created another legendary band.
The album, however, falls short of the maximum score because it is quite uneven: there are at least three songs that would not hurt the release if dropped.
Naturally, the album opens with "Kill the King" (is there a Rainbow concert release that does not have this one?) It must have been quite a treat to see this formation live.

Rainbow (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rainbow is a British hard rock band that formed in 1974.
The album is regarded by many as one of the best of all 70s hard rock releases.
The band hit their sales peak over the next two years with the "Down to Earth" and "Difficult to Cure" albums from which 3 top ten hits came.

Down to Earth played a major part in the history of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. It was a transitional album, falling between the classic heavy rock period of albums such as 'Rising' and 'Long Live Rock & Roll';and the later AOR sound of 'Straight Between The Eyes' et al.
"Down to Earth" really is a work of art not comedy - Ritchie's last gasp as a creative genius before he was engulfed in mediocrity and commercialism - thanks to the rest of the band for giving him an adult context to work in.
This is the first Rainbow album I ever heard, back in the late '80s, and although it saw the band taking a different direction away from the Dio era, DOWN TO EARTH certainly lives up to its title by being a meaty rocker.

 Rainbow Album Reviews
By comparison, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow seems a tad tentative, perhaps in part because the overall talent level in the band wasn't nearly as high, but also because it took an album for Blackmore and Dio to figure out exactly what they wanted their band to be.
Not coincidentally, the three Rainbow albums with Turner were the most commercially successful of the band's career, but it also proved to be the least musically adventurous and ultimately unsatisfying Rainbow era.
Most of the album is comprised of live cuts of the Turner years, and most of Turner's songs are improved away from the sterile confines of recording studios.

By the time Rainbow began in the mid-seventies, many of heavy metal's prime architects began to ape the habits of their progressive-rock brethren by becoming an institution of traveling, revolving-door musicians, all of whom have played on albums by other top-tier bands.
As such, Rainbow could be considered the ultimate supergroup because it became a pit stop or even a launching pad for the careers of many of the most lauded names in heavy metal history.
Down to Earth is more consistent than the first three Rainbow albums, less commercial than the final three.

Releasing eight albums during it's decade long run, the band finally came to an end when Blackmore departed to rejoin his old Deep Purple comrades in a full-fledged reunion in 1984.
And while the impact of Rainbow's influence has faded with the intervening decades, theirs was a crucial chapter in the development of heavy metal and hard rock.
With the release of 1979's Down to Earth, gone were the mystical themes and epic metal compositions, replaced by a more streamlined commercial hard rock style.

Minimal techno/microhouse, for instance, has allowed musicians to focus on the intrinsic skeletal structure of the music pared down to its most basic fundamentals, with the bloated bulk of the traditional techno music completely pared away.
Towards the end of the album's second half, a glimmer of light begins to peer through the darkness.
The music on The Soul of the Rainbow and the Harmony of Light does have the effect, however, of lulling the listener into a trance, as the tracks themselves are so long in duration (four tracks ranging between seven and almost twenty minutes in length).

A singer-songwriter based in a town where tunesmiths practically flow through the water pipes, Rouse is distinctive not only because she's a practicing Quaker, but because she uses her music to raise awareness about the ecology and the environment.
In 1995, Rouse's song "Standing On The Shoulders" was chosen to be the theme song for the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Women's Suffrage in Washington, D.C. She receives many requests from organizations that want to use the song to honor their local leaders, graduates and retirees.
The album's theme is how we are related to all things on earth and the universe.

But then, late last year, his election to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame made you remember just how potent, irresistible and groundbreaking a force he once was.

Rainbow was an excellent hard rock band in the seventies, featuring Ronnie James Dio in one of his earliest-known rock roles.
Rainbow's albums got remastered and reissued in recent years, but sadly, the remaster series is one of those crappy ones that remasters the sound and does nothing else.
Following this album, Rainbow would release some more albums with Turner and gain the publicity that would immortalize them, but the follow-up albums would not be as good as this one.

Their first three studio albums were somewhat consistent and representative of a band effort, but even through those years it was Ritchie plus any number of revolving musicians.
Egomaniac Ritchie Blackmore recorded this album as a solo effort with Ronnie James Dio and his current band Elf, minus their guitarist of course.
Rainbow was something of a supergroup at this point with Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover handling bass duties, as well as producing, consumate drummer Cozy Powell pounding on the skins, and Don Airey on keys.

The Rainbow catalogue got remastered and reissued in recent years, but the remasters are disappointing in that they only remastered the sound and did nothing else - no expanded liner notes, no bonus tracks, no twofer albums, no extras whatsoever.
People need to stop ripping on this album and REALLY give it a listen, there were a lot of harsh reviews for 'Down To Earth', either people were complaining about Bonnett's voice or didn't like the AOR style rock sound of the album.
Besides, this is still a hard rock album with a slight pop edge as opposed to the next album ('Difficult To Cure') which was a pop album with a slight hard rock edge.

The band's 1975 debut album, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, was a continuation of the heavy rock that was Deep Purple and Elf's stock-in-trade.
Blackmore changed the lineup of Rainbow for their second album, Rainbow Rising (1976), replacing Gruber with Jimmy Bain, Soule with Tony Carey, and Driscoll with Cozy Powell.

And after that final chorus, the album goes into a series of odd recordings mixed in with the drums and guitar, and its actually really cool.

Whittled down to a duo from a trio since last year’s “The Sky has Run Into the Sea,” Growing has tightened it’s focus and Kevin Doria and Joe Dernardo have comfortably settled into their feedback conjuring postures.
Growing move closer to the “Theater of Eternal Music” with this album than to “Earth II.” Patient listeners and fans of groups like Rh Band, the previously mentioned Birchville Cat Motel, and the (original) Dream Syndicate are advised not skip over this Kranky Records release.

As for 'Kill The King', that one was already previously introduced in Rainbow's stage performances of 1977, and Blackmore and Dio didn't disappoint the fans with the marvelous studio version: speed-metal at its most aggressive and technically perfect.
I originally thought of giving the album the same rating as Down To Earth, but that would have placed the album on the same level with Foreigner's best, and this is still marginally better.
So all in all, the album is essentially saved by the fact that on a bunch of remaining tunes, Blackmore does squeeze out a bunch of interesting bluesy riffs.

The RAINBOW thing was ten years after Joe had been in the band, and it was very much a fresh approach musically.

Actually, him and I were sitting down and discussing things but he was kind of shepherded away from the band and became more and more difficult to communicate with.

Many collectors regard the sleeve to be just as important as the vinyl and UK album sleeves from the 60's & 70's can be sought after as much for their high standards of manufacture as their imagery.
By the early 90's demand for vinyl albums was in decline; CDs were becoming the dominant format, to the point where many artists no longer released their albums on vinyl.
Classic albums are once again being remastered and reissued, sometimes as limited edition audiophile pressings, although many collectors still believe the original pressings sound best.

The rhythm and sequences are all very Schulzian but so much happens in the nine minute duration both with the pianoish lead line, sequences and high hat accompaniment that it is hard to pin it down to a particular period.
